47-53 truck radio
 

I have two original radios for the 47-53 trucks. One is in good shape and should be rebuildable. The other would probably only be good for parts. My question is, how bad are they to rebuild, is it worth it, and if it is worth it, does anyone know of a good source for parts?

It seems like a lot of time and effort to make the old one decent again, and if you have a little spare cash its well worth the investment to update to the new retro replacement units. From classic car sterios. You get the look and fit of the original, with a digital tuner, LCD display that shows through the old style face, push button action, and MP3 and ipod conectivity. Plus if you are bluetooth phone capable then you can add that too. For hands free phone calls.

Hey Speedy,

Is that radio from LMC Truck? I've been looking for one for my 49, just want to find out if you were happy with it.

Was going to get one from fleabay as I had seen them in a couple shops in LA, but when I needed some spot to mount the vintage air controls, and the radio hole was perfect, so I will be fitting a hidden sound system with a hand held controller.
My opinion is these various radios are made with late model electronics, so they are way ahead of an old valve radio. , and they come with great upgrade options, if you dont need the extra features, then you will pay way less. Hope this helps.

That looks like a good option. Thanks for the replies. I want something that looks original, but it would be nice to have more up to date equipment. I had a radio mounted under the dash, but the cowl vent leaked and filled the radio full of water, and when I turned the ignition on...well lets just say its toast! Needless to say, I will get the vent fixed before I put another radio in.

Well the day of taking your tubes down to the grocery or hardware store and sticking them in the tube tester are long gone. I remember doing that on my 51 Merc and 55 Buick a time or two when the radio gave out and then the clerk would get you the fuse you needed out of the cabinet. If there is still an old school tv repair shop still in business in your area you might be able to get them to test the tubes and maybe even give you some pointers on the radio.
