No spark!!!!! Help
 

Hello guys im new here and have a problem. so a couple of weeks ago I bought a 1965 chevy c10 that had been sitting for around 30 years. once I got it home I tore into. I have replaced the fuel pump added a clear fuel filter, battery, plugs, wires, cap and rotor button, condenser, points and I learned how to set points that was a new one for me. also replaced the starter. so I know its getting fuel, I also have done a compression test and it was good but im still not getting any spark any ideas?? also this is on a 230 inline 6 motor. could it be the ballast resistor? or some wiring cause I have only the purple wire going to the soleinod on the starter. and of coarse the battery cable lol

Do you have a wire going to your coil? If so, how many volts does that wire have on it when they truck is in the ON position and on the START position?

i'll have to look tomorrow and I will have to get a volt meter, but I have the wire coming from the distributer to the negative side of the coil, then I have a single red wire coming from the coil up to the ballast resistor. regaurdless im going to buy a new resistor. also should I have a wire going from the starter to the coil or what.

to see if it runs run a wire from the + post on the battery to the + side of the coil don't worry about the resistor for this test (also if it starts you will have to pull the wire off to stop the engine) also make sure there is NO oil (from the feeler gauge) on the points from setting them IF there is ANY oil it WONT have spark

okay so I went and ran the wire straight to the battery and still nothing so that tells me that the coil is not receiving a spark so I took the points off cleaned them off and re gauged them and put it all back together and still nothing im lost.

If you ran a straight 12 volts directly to the coil and still got no spark from the coil...you have a bad coil.

well i'll have to get voltmeter tomorrow to confirm if it is getting a full 12v what should the voltage look like if it is just in the on postion.

bad coil/bad condenser/shorted wire to points/points not closing? .... not much else it could be

if properly wired with key on about 6 volts at + side of coil ...12 volts when cranking .... BUT with a wire from battery to coil you bypassed about 90 percent of the possible causes of no spark

okay so I went and got a volt meter and I think I did it wrong but I put the tester on olhms and took the red lead and put it on the positive side of the coil and the black lead on the negative side is that the right way or did I do it wrong im not a big electrical guy lol when I did that it was only reading 1.6 olhms

Probably obvious, but your motor had a good solid ground?

Check the coil with your multi-meter for the proper Ohm's. You can You Tube this to see how it is done. Process of elimination.

Depends on your truck I suppose, but somewhere there should be a big cable from the block or head to the frame. Big like a battery cable sometimes. Or maybe one from a head to the firewall.

Connect the positive side of your multi meter to the positive side of the battery. Touch the ground lead of your meter to the block or your distributor housing. If it reads @12 volts your block is grounded.
