Awesome day at the junkyard!!!

What a day actually only a couple of hours!! I had first dibs on a new to the yard 72 C20. I found a hood ornament that I have never seen before on our trucks and IMHO I think it compliments the truck the best. Here is a picture.

I also got a heavy duty radiator, hei distributor, set of brand new mirrors, edelbrock carb 1405, and the hood ornament for just over 130 bucks. I felt like a thief. I am headed back tomorrow to grab a few more things like the rad support because mine will be to small i guess and a few cables that I forgot to grab for the carb. I am going to consider this a win.

That is pretty neat . It looks like a Monte Carlo ornament.

The hood ornament has a serial number inside and it starts with JC. So I am thinking something from JC whitney catalog back in the day.

Just a couple of tips for you.

The hood ornament is not a factory item on the 67-72 trucks. Not sure if this matters to you but thought I would let you know.

Also, the radiator support is not different on a heavy duty radiator. Only the radiator supports on the top and bottom are the difference. The lowers will be riveted and you will need to drill the rivets but this is much easier than changing the whole radiator support unless yours is rotted under the battery tray and this one is not.

The uppers are bolt on and easy to change. Make sure you get the rubber inserts that go with them.

Here are a few things to look for at the scrap yards on these trucks:

Factory tach dash and tach harness
Bucket/Buddy seats
Center console
Tilt wheel
Disc brake conversion parts
clean no pit door handles
Factory Am/FM radio
Sport mirrors
Sport rear bumper with brackets
Any 4x4 parts such as engine cross member, spring hangers, engine and trans cross members, spicer hub parts
hub caps in restorable condition
any AC parts, brackets, vents, etc

Of course anything on the truck that is in good condition is worth saving from the crusher if you are able.

Hope this helps

Have fun,
Tom

this truck is a 4x4. my truck is not personally. Is there anything that is ridiculously hard to find (ie. worth some bucks and there for my time). I will check my core support and evaluate. Upper and lower rad supports are on my list for tomorrow. What does the sport rear bumper look like? As far as being stock, I am not for against it. I just like my ride to look different but like it could have been an extra from the factory. Not to crazy but not just bone stock. Ya know???

So the truck is a 72 C20 4x4? If so, someone needs to save it from the crusher. The rolling chassis is worth $1,500.00 + if complete with drive lines and spicer hubs. Look for the front hubs and they will have a blue center. These are very hard to find in good condition.

The sport bumper will be chrome and look similar to the front bumper and have a cut out in the middle for the license plate bracket.

Re: Awesome day at the junkyard!!!

Yes it had blue centers on the front hubs. This truck seems like a honey whole for someone. What do I need to look for on the hubs to make sure they are good. Hubs are 12 bucks at this yard. It does not have the sport bumper. I remember the way it looked. The drive line is there. I think the SPID said it had a 350 and I know it had a manual tranny. Hell all 4 wheels were still there too. To be honest with you I don't know how this truck made it to a yard at all. Such a crime.

Pick ups will not be badged as K20 but they are refereed to as such. The fender badge will still read Custom/20 on a 72. If it has 8 lug wheels and a front differential, it is most likely a K20.

Post some more photos of the complete truck if possible.

Look for the condition of the blue dials. See if they have any hard plier marks on them and if they will turn by hand without forcing. The only real way to judge the condition is to pull them and clean them and inspect. The inside of the dials are subject to cracking but for $12.00 each, I promise you if they are blue K20 hubs, you will get you money back easy.

I got them. They seem to be in pretty good shape. They move freely. Now what do I do with them?

It's about time I donate to the site anyways because this site has been invaluable for me. They will be on the board soon. I have to clean them up and get some good pics.

IF that hood ornament isn't a stock item, what does the stock look like? My 72 has nothing there, just two holes in the hood :-/

There is no option for a hood ornament on a 67-72 Chevy truck. Not from the factory. If there is one on a truck then it came from something else.
