5-Lug Wheels on my GMC - need to replace

The tires on the 72 GMC c15 that I just bought are shot, and need replacing. Upon inspection I realized that the rim on one of the wheels is messed up, so i'm guessing I can't get anyone to put a tire on it.

What do I need to look for in replacement wheels, as far as the fit? Is there a certain name for this kind of wheel pattern?

Mine wheels are 16", have 5 lugs, measuring 3" from one to the next (center of stud to center of next stud), and the center hub appears to be 3" as well. From what I have heard, these old Chevy and GMC were either 8 lug or 6 lug - not 5. Is that right?

Interesting! Then I've been told wrong. Glad to hear it though.

When replacing, will any 16" 5-lug wheel on Craigslist (or wherever) fit, or is there a certain name to this type / pattern?

If that is the damage you spoke of thats not bad at all. You can knock the lip back out with a hammer. It will seal.
As far as looking for new wheels you need a 15", 5 x 5" bolt pattern with a backspace of 3 1/2" to 4" stock.

Really? That's good news! I will try knocking that lip down.

And thanks for the info on pattern - if I find a good deal I may replace them anyway.

BTW - I see pattern descriptions like "5 on 5.5" and "6 on 5.5". What does that mean?

Re: 5-Lug Wheels on my GMC - need to replace

first # is the number of lugs. second set of #s is the pattern description.
like 5 on 5 means five lug lugs spaced 5" apart at their widest point
5 on 5.5 means five lug 5 and a half inches apart and so on.
all our trucks are 5 on 5 and 6 on 5.5
chevy passenger cars and s-10 type trucks for chevy are mostly 5 on 4.75

Aha, another mystery solved! Thanks for the help. Once I've caught up on expenditures for this new project, I may pay for a membership on here. Good place!

Are you positive the tires say 16"? I have never seen that particular wheel with a 5 on 5" pattern and for a 16" tire. I have a pair of 15" at the house just like them...
