Gone Fishing, and then...

It was my birthday on Monday and I decided to load my friends jon boat in the old truck and head out to a little fishing hole. It was a great day even though the fish weren't biting. Snapped a couple of quick pics including one with the truck on the boat launch.
Later that night, I pulled the boat out of the back of the truck and headed for a local cruise night that I rarely get a chance to go to. The truck was still really clean from a car show I didn't go to on a rainy night. It is a pretty small cruise night compared to other towns and I arrived about 20 minutes before it started. I got a spot right up front, parked and took a seat on the tail gate. About 10 minutes later I was approached by event staff explaining that I'd have to move because the spot was for vehicles that were a part of the cruise night. I explained the truck was there for the cruise night and the man responded with "Really?!?!". I mean I know my truck isn't the prettiest, but I was dumbfounded (BTW, I didn't leave the spot). I guess some people still see this things as old trucks... Anyone else ever have an experience like this? |

Look at it this way, you gave him an education on old Chevy trucks....:).. Next time he won't make the same dumb mistake. Some of the people that run the businesses where the cruises are held don't have a clue about classic vehicles. Case in point, I went to a cruise at a nearby Pizza Ranch and one of the awards is for the managers pick. The manager told the guy hosting the cruise that he wanted the Green Chevy to be one of his picks.... The car he was pointing to was a really nice LINCOLN CONTINENTAL... Go figure. LockDoc |
Re: Gone Fishing, and then...
Thats a neat little truck. Dont let it bother you. Some people are just narrow minded or a little dense, maybe not intentionally, but think the cruises and classics should be be new paint and chrome. Just uneducated..

Re: Gone Fishing, and then...
Don't worry about it, bet he felt stupid. We always bring our old trucks around here, pretty or ugly. Most people love the old trucks, nice one BTW I'd drive the wheels off of it.

Re: Gone Fishing, and then...
I really didn't think that it bothered me all that much, but here we are 5 days later and I am still thinking about it. Maybe buffing out that old green paint and getting the torn bench seat fixed will make me feel a little better.

I had a similar situation when taking our 72 Suburban to a local car show. The lady manning the show car entrance was trying to get me to park in spectator parking.
You have a great looking truck...and many people just don't get it. |
Re: Gone Fishing, and then...

I guess that guy didn't hear the news anchor exclaiming how popular these classic trucks are. ;)

Re: Gone Fishing, and then...
Most cruise ins want pre 1980 stuff they frown on a 1981 chevette lol but normaly any old truck no matter what kind of shape its in is welcomed

Re: Gone Fishing, and then...
I once took our really nice 69 shortbed to a cruise and brunch with the local muscle car club. When we stopped to eat at the restaurant a guy who had a 65 Malibu with a smallblock watches us get out and he says," nice.... TRUCK". He wasn't smiling. Never going to understand that. I bet that little shortbed would've waxed his A**. Lol, oh well.
On a related note; this last year HotRod Magazine had an open track shootout with some really high dollar, high tech Pro Touring muscle cars. One of the competitors was the Roadster Shop out of Ill. They were going to bring a customers Camaro but the guy decided understandably that he had second thoughts on them beating on his car like that. Sooo, they brought their 72 chevy shortbed. HotRod said ok, run it, and they did. Long story short, the little truck beat ALL the cars. HotRods response, "its a fast truck but not a car." Win went to a Camaro... that finished second to the truck. go figure. |
Re: Gone Fishing, and then...
You never know, that guy might of been trying to keep the best spots open for some favorites he thought were coming. I use my old truck for transportation and if I drive it to a show they usually try to get that thing in the show and it's not show material.

I've never had the truck vs. car prejudice turned on me personally, but I'm sure its annoying. |
Re: Gone Fishing, and then...
Wow never seen discrimination like that at car shows but I wouldn't sweat it. If you happen to see the guy at a Home Depot with his car be sure to tell him trucks only lol
