67 spid help please
2 Attachment(s)
this spid is from a shortbed i'm looking at. am i being paranoid or is this suspicious? the top row where model number is normally printed is missing. the vin has been re-stamped. you can see the first several digits of the original vin up to the plant letter, but the 6 unique numbers are gone. i'm not sure how one would have "erased" some of the original ink, but if it's possible it would be a good way to hide a long to short conversion. any help would be appreciated...

Re: 67 spid help please
Thats one hell of a typo, i'd look at the frame on the driver side just behind the ft wheel and compair it to the frame vin, and also the vin plate, they should be the same.
Can you tell if the truck is all origional? of the glove box door was replaced i could see why somebody might try that but how to retype it on an old sticker? I'd also want to verify the title they have also matches and they are legal owners, i'd also contact the DMV or a licensing office and have them run the number as well. Yes to me it liiks suspicious. |
Re: 67 spid help please
A short bed conversion would be the least of my worries. The re-stamped VIN would bother me enough not to buy it.

Re: 67 spid help please
Hope you want it pretty bad 'cause I would get frame serial#,cab#,and compare to spid.Could even run the frame #through the dmv/state police just to be safe. If all clear who cares about the glove box spid. Have a new one made.Good Idea to check the frame also as previously stated for a bad chop job.

Re: 67 spid help please
68, There is nothing suspicious about that SPID. 1967s from St. Louis SPIDs did not have model numbers on them from 00001 to at least truck number 16000 (your truck is in the 6000 area). The shadow vin numbers appear all year(67 St. Louis). Shadow VINs were corrected for 1968MY at St. Louis. No need to replace the SPID. That is correct and original as compared to other known SPIDs from 67 St. Louis. It's still a good idea to check the partial frame VIN and check the frame for signs of shorting.

Re: 67 spid help please
This is based on solid research over many years. Due to ongoing projects and commitments I am going to leave it at that. SS Tim and I are constantly working SPIDs and other information sources to identify variations. Buyers often contact us to verify documentation on vehicles they are wanting to purchase. At some point we have to close the door on what we consider to be insider information. Lets face it too much just makes the fakes better and harder to spot. In the end it makes it costly to some unwitting buyer.

Re: 67 spid help please
given how important the spid is to prove originality, it amazes me how many are removed or painted over. i guess i shouldn't be amazed, it's just sad.
