305 engine suffix code

3 Attachment(s)
I have this eng. 5.0L already in truck and its a little hard to get the Casting #'s but here's what I could get from area of casting #'s. Also I cant find what the suffix code is other then the letters coming up as a Big Block, Its a small block & not a big block. With out the Casting #'s I am not for sure if it is some kind of a special engine or something like that, Here's some pic's to look at guys. Oh I'm sorry my Male Chauvinist side is showing through, AND "Gals" if applicable. I would like to know more then I know so far about it, Any help would be great, Thanks, mjgord51

Re: 305 engine suffix code

Then let's go north a bit!! So to speak!! LOL!!
Is there any other numbers below the ones on the pad?
Some blocks like crate engines and the old factory target master motors had an identifying number on the pad too. Usually started with a one.

Re: 305 engine suffix code

On the rear pass side of the block there will be a casting number, mine is 14088551 which is a 86-92 305...http://www.nastyz28.com/sbchevy/sblock.html#casting... hope this helps....

Re: 305 engine suffix code

On the Nasty Z28 site, looks like the AK* engines are 1989 305 MonteCarlo or Firebird. That kinds fits with what it look like. Maybe meant to be AKH but they got lazy? Appears to have orange heads so maybe off an original 307? Lots of conjecture.

Re: 305 engine suffix code

Mjgord51, I can't find a decode for application code AKA (small block) either.
The plant code V means the engine was built in Flint MI.
07 is July
21 is the 21st day of July
The 5.0LG is for 5 Liters Gross or a 305cid.
SGI is Spheroidal Graphite Iron which is the type of iron used for the block.
Not much help, Sorry.
AKC, AKF, AKH, AKJ, AKM, AKN, AKP, AKS, AKU are all 1989, 305 codes.
ATA is also a 1989 305, Maybe a miss stamp is possible??
Your casting number will give you a year range and the date code will narrow it down to the exact year. It's definitely a 305 block.
Hope your health issues improve. I know how troubling that can be.
I'll keep looking for the AKA code.

I will try and pull the starter to find more #'s but for now another problem just popped up. My Emg. flashers stopped flashing but when I set them and push on brake peddle they stay on, take foot off brake and they go out, I have enough Gray hairs but it looks like I'll have some more shortly LOL LOL, Thanks, mjgord51

Re: 305 engine suffix code

Why would you need to pull the starter?
Any casting codes or build dates are on the bellhousing flange behind the heads.

Have you replaced your flasher on the fuse box to see if thats what's causing your flasher problem. Stuff doesn't last forever, especially electrical stuff.

That was the first thing checked (replaced new), 2nd was turning on all turn signals & each works OK, might need a new turn signal sw. saw some where Orignal has RED hazard knob my sw. might have been replaced at one time, also might need to look at a wiring diagram (for color wire) to check for power coming out of sw./wire harness when in gauged , this might be a good start for me?

Some where was told the #'s on Pass side of block, only thing I could think of to take starter out cause I can't see any thing with it in

Might the #'s be on the opposite side (pass) behind head. I know other blocks ( 283,302,327,350) all have casting #'s on left side. might be the 305's arnt normal? LOL LOL you think!

Re: 305 engine suffix code

Wiring problems salved, I just installed a shi* load of ground straps (5) all over and also some larger gauge ground wire from Eng to frame then frame to radiator support and a new ground from battery to frame. I also took the fuss block/panel off and cleaned all rust from the fuss holder clips. I now have all lites in working order, I guess the old saying is true about being " An old Rust bucket" LOL

I think it was a good place to start with, It had some straps (3) already but they looked like they were from 1968, I knew at some point they needed to be replaced but when I started checking some of the lites & wiring thats when all hel* started, FIXED NOW. Thanks

The hole motor is Orange, intake is Alum. Where does the 307 come in here, just because its heads are orange most SBC eng. I have seen are Orange some being Black.

can the14088551 be used in 85 c10?
Im new to this but my 305 in my truck gave up and i have another 305 with that same code.
wondering if I can just swap it out?

dmack91 01-09-2024 12:22 AM

Re: 305 engine suffix code

Should be able to just swap one for the other. Pretty much any small block will swap in with minimal concerns/issues.
