Power steering box from CPP-400 series
 

I have a 58 Chevy Apache 3100 that I converted to power steering with the CPP 400 series kit. Has anyone experienced a side movement in the output shaft that connects to Pitman arm. When I turn steering wheel I can see a side ways movement. I am no expert when it comes to these box's, but it seems to me that there should be no movement. Thanks for listening.

is that their propietary box that mounts inside the frame rail?

If so, I have one on my wife's 57 and I'll take a look for movement.

I've got one on my '61 F100. I'll look, but it's only been on there a month or so.

I do not think any movement, other than maybe thousands of an inch, would be acceptable. Going to get lots of wandering and steering loosening up as you drive it. I would contact CCP and see if it is a simple adjustment or replacement. I could not find any schematic diagram or info on what the inside looks like to see if there was any adjustment.

No movement to speak of on my old F@*d. Like Orrie said, I'd call CPP. Their tech guys seemed pretty good when I talked to them.

I found two diagrams that might help. One is a toyota schematic, which I think the CCP is modeled after. Other is a saginaw. If you note on the end of the pitman shaft the screw/nut is adjustable. could be as simple as that not being properly adjusted IF yours is set up the same. The worm gear could be moving the shaft back and forth if the nut on the other end is not tight enough.

Thanks for the info guys. It is the box that mounts inside the frame. As for the loose steering I solved that by getting rid of the stud and lock nut that hold the collar that joins the column and box. I used a #8 bolt with lock nut and red loctite to keep them joined together. So if your using CPP's kit make sure you check those studs and nuts on the collar/universal joint. As for adjusting the worm gear they said it would brake the lifetime guarantee for replacement if I did it. It would have to be removed and sent back to them for adjustment. Glad you fixed it, I had another thought while out in the shop working on my irrigation pump. On the drag link side they show a bushing held in place with a snap ring, I thought maybe the snap ring had went MIA and was allowing the shaft and bushing to slide outward.'
