If you have Classic Chevy, Classic Chevy Truck or Popular Hotrodding magazines, theres an ad in the back of some issues that sells 3-point seat belts for around 79.95. If you have the ad can you please give me the phone# and address Thanx. This town I live in does'nt have squat for magazines and I got a ticket.

three point harness requirement in ILLINOIS

ok - now i was just having this discussion the other day with longhornjeff (an illinois board member).

we were comparing the different seatbelt laws from indiana to illinois. in indiana (to the best of my knowledge), we are not required to have ANY seatbelts in pickup trucks (mostly because we are a highly agricultural state. i guess that illinois not only requires seatbelts in pickup trucks, but they also require three-point seatbelts. however, he said that even though you might get a ticket from an officer for not having three-point seat belts in our trucks, that you can go to court and have the ticket thrown out because you can prove to the judge that our trucks had three-point seatbelts as an OPTION, and thus it isnt required to have them in the trucks.

do you think that is the case? has anyone in illinois (or any other state for that matter) ever tried going to court based on this situation? any ideas? comments?

this is an interesting situation considering we just recently had this discussion. cool!

;) jewels.

p.s. you make me want to install my seatbelts before i drive thru illinois ;)

Whatever came with the vehicle cannot be a problem. My belts simply fell apart and need replacing. I want 3-points. Cops just want to see you wearing belts or its more revenue for the politicians. If you notice the states that spent themselves into deficits (like Illinois) are hitting the seatbelt laws more for more $. I feel sorry for people that lost jobs, can't afford insurance, etc, and get treated like criminals.

AFAIK, no state yet requires retrofitting non-stock equipment into any vehicle, even Kalifornia or the People's Republik of Taxachusetts. Does anybody have a run-down of seat belt laws nationwide?

hanssolo 09-10-2003 02:09 PM

Thanx folks. Appartently there's several to choose from.

smokekiki 09-10-2003 02:38 PM

My brother in law shows and judges antique cars for AACA.They have passed a law for the clubs to be able to retro fit seatbelts without deducting any points for having non original equipment.

Belts

Went thru an inspection roadblock a couple of months ago and the nice officer thought he had me til he saw my lap belts . If they came as original equipment you're good to go here .

I am not sure about the retrofitting thing here in Ohio, but I did get pulled over the other day and was about to be given a seatbelt ticket til the officer saw the lap belt. :D

I sell the 3 point seat belts in several different colors, I also have installed lots of them. They go in without any modifications

In Missouri, you can get a Show truck permit, and as long as you are driving to a show, you don't need the seat belts. I think it used to be all antique vehicles, but I think that has changed now. In Arkansas the regular 2 point is required if the vehicle is on the roads.

I installed 3-point shoulder belts in my truck for a grand total for $30 and a hour of labor. Go the the salvage yard and get some belts out of a '82-'93 Chevy S10 or GMC Sonoma. I picked up a pair for $30. The passenger side is a 100% complete bolt in, and the driver's side bolts in with the exception on the mounting point on the floor. You have to drill one hole in the floor to move the ratchet mechanisim forward about 4". Then you are done. I think it is proably the best upgrade i have done to my truck.

i have had no problem with any seat belt laws here in Texas, my parents hate it when i go somewhere with my 2 little bros cause the 10 year old sits in the middle and has no belt, but back on subject in Texas if that is the way the vehicle was made then you are good to go, and on the lap belt i like it a lot since i dont where one half the time anyway if you get pulled over they cant really see you reach to buckle it up.
