Can an LS go in a 71 4X4?

Hey guys,

So I have been searching around and have found some info here and there on putting a ls into a 4x4, but then I go to look up motor mounts for a 1971 ls swap and they all say for 2wd only. Are the mounts on 4x4 already at the right spot for the new engine or am I not able to do it without custom work?

Thanks for the help!

That's what I used and it fit great.

I just checked out your build thread and saw you plan to use the np205. With that xmember will that push the motor too close to the Radiator to be able to fit in front of the Tcase?

Nevermind I got further into your build and found what I was looking for. I might have to look into that 31 gallon tank for the back of the burb! Thanks so much for your input.

Dirty Dingo also offers a crossmember as well

Keep in mind you are proabably going to need a minimum 2" lift also

ID really love to do mine but that's more upfront cost and time for the project have to wait and see where I stand when its go time!

Ya I was just looking into what all it would take to go the ls route since I am doing a frame off restoration anyway (or attempting to at least) and figured I better decide before I buy everything to keep it stock.

So I have to have at least a 2" lift to be able to run this crossmember? Is it due to space in between the front axle and the bottom of the Crossmember or oil pan?

Thanks.

You have new springs so it might clear.

I guess I will call the company to get some hard measurements to make sure it will work.

Thanks!

Re: Can an LS go in a 71 4X4?

So it appears with the dirty dingo I dont need to remove the bump stops during installation, am I correct that the Pacific fab one makes you remove them? It also looks like in the Dirty dingo installation photo that the front springs are the stock 2 leaf springs so I am assuming I don't need a lift for that one to work. For anyone that has installed this is that right?

Thanks for helping me out!

Re: Can an LS go in a 71 4X4?

read joeys thread

I think you don't need a lift for any of them until you make the front flex a little

Every build except for the aliens that I gave read used a lift but the alien fabbed his own mount if I recall

just tryig to help make sure you don't miss something if you can find a solution I am all ears I would love to LS mine but all the extra mods that come with it steer me away at times. More fab work and fitting means more down time which means more chance I lose interest

Thank you for the help. Ya I keep going back and forth between keeping a 350 or going with the LS with the more modifications I would need. The sane side of me says to leave it alone and enjoy the sb but the wild side says go for it ha ha.

My biggest thing is I want EFI

I'm looking at a guy that offers rebuilt stand alone TBI units based on the 87-95 gm trucks. They work on any 4 barrel manifold

It's bolt on and only takes a few electrical connections and a electric fuel pump it comes with everything to do it. But it's almost $900. For about $1200 I can buy an ls complete 3 wire hookup.

I guess it will just depend on what way the wind is blowing when the time finally comes to tear into the truck

Re: Can an LS go in a 71 4X4?

I bought everything I need for my swap, just haven't worked on it in about 3 years :(. I bought the pacfab cross member and while I was there they hooked me up with a complete harness that another customer bought and then changed his mind. I used fuelcellguy to build me an aluminum tank with the in tank electronic fuel pump. The tank is ok, but looks like a novice welder made it. He said he pressure checks his tanks so I trust that there are no leaks, I just haven't had time or money to finish my project. If you are using a 4l60e and you want the transfer case to stay mounted in the same spot you will need an adapter that runs about 5-600+. There is a lot of things you will find that you need that add up fast.
