front end noise - 2006 silverado

Looking for experience from the forum. There is a noise in the front end of my low milage(50k) 2006 Silverado crew cab. I would describe it as a clunk whenever I hit a bump. It comes from both driver and pass side but driver side noise seems worse. If I would guess I would think it was from worn/loose shock bushings. But after inspecting they are not loose at all. Is there something in these trucks that wear quickly or is prone to getting loose? The shocks need replacing but are not loose. Can the clunk be coming from something inside the shocks? Thanks for all input.

thanks for letting me know someone else has the same issue-at least I'm not crazy. Ironically, when I check out the front end, what I find is everything is tight and solid with no wear indication. I suspect the shocks have something internal that clunks. If so surely others on the forum have experience related to this problem.

Check your brake calipers. I chased this rattle and clunk for a year on my '06 K2500 Silverado. Turns out the rubber "bushings" on the caliper bolts wear out and leave the caliper a little loose.

I've recently redone my front brakes and installed new rubber "bushings" on the caliper bolts. Rattle went away. 6 months later... rattling again.

Not sure if new calipers will make it stop or what.

Interesting. So "if" this is the issue on my truck, are you saying that with the wheel off, I should be able to move the caliper with hand force and verify the looseness?

Just crawl underneath it without removing the wheel and smack it with your hand... it'll be loose enough to rattle.

The steering shaft maybe; that's what came to my mind. Have had this problem on a '99, '01, & '04 truck myself ...here's a tread about fixing it http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=408606

I suggest driving around to find a rough spot of road that causes the noise you hear. Drive across it again while holding slight pressure on the brake pedal. This should eliminate the caliper as a possible cause of the clunk if the noise continues.

check the body mount bushings theres a tsb for noise and I think theres an updated bushing. you have to try to pry cab up from chassis they will look ok until you do that

That is exactly how I first figured it was the calipers. :)

I would check the steering shaft. that will also do it on turns as well. quick fix for that is un bolt it at the middle and slide it up and redistribute the grease. its not a permanent fix but will make it go away for a while. I have had the upper shock mounts go bad as well. they will cause a clunk over bumps.

Boog, I had the same idea as you. I drove downhill on a bumpy road while applying brake pressure-noise was still there. Good test and eliminated one possibility. Need to get time to look at that steering shaft.

Is the truck 4X4? check the torsion bar mounts. I know they are under the cab but the back part is rubber and it is a solid shaft up to the lower control arm so it can send the noise forward making you think it is at the front wheel. Jim

No Jim, it is 2 wd-should have stated that up front.
