Considering a tuner
 
I live in rural Texas and have limited access to tuning services. I am thinking of purchasing a tuner because I have two ls projects and a third engine waiting for a project. I would like to do simple things like be able to change the gear ratio tire sizes ect. I don't want to get too deep into it like changing air/fuel ratios.

Do you guys have a suggestions on what would be a good programmer for this or should I steer clear of this all together?

Hp tuners has a nice one. About $ 500 When I Bought Mine A Few Years back. And you should be able to tune about for vehicles with it before you have to buy more credits. They have an HP Tuners forum where people can answer your questions, some people are nice enough to even share their files with you if their setups are the same as you. It's very easy to do things like change your tire size and remove the theft deterrent pass key information.

How do the credits work? I know that the tuner will come with 4 or so and more can be purchased. Does it cost a credit each time you change the tune or does one credit cover one car?

Most vehicles are one credit a tune per vehicle. Look on their website and it shows each vehicle the tuner will work with and how many credits per vehicle.

Starting at $650ish, you really want pro so it can have external Wideband interfaces directly into the box. Makes logging easier, and pro can log without the laptop attached for street tuning.

Credits are depending on the vehicle. Late model Fords for example cost more credits than some others because they use a predicted virtual VE system. Diesels also cost more. Most GM vehicles are 2 credits, Fords are 3. If you want a custom-os for doing 2 or 3 bar, or SD, then its 3 credits.
