clutch linkage question 71 C20
 

Hey gang, look at the pic I have attached and tell me if this looks normal for the clutch linkage on a 71 C20 with a 292 six. It looks to be bent to me, but not sure. The clutch is very hard to push in. Thanks for any answers.

Linkage looks OK. Check your motor and transmission rubber mounts. If they are oil soaked or separated it will let the engine drop down and put a kink in the engine bracket/Z-bar connection. It looks like you might need a little grease on the wedge that goes between the end of the clutch adjustment rod and the clutch fork. It looks a little dry and rusty there.....

He hasn't been on the board since 10-10-2015.

Like I said in my earlier post be sure and check the rubber engine and trans mounts. If they are bad they can cause stuff to bind up. Also lube all of the pivot points on the linkage, including the under dash parts.. I'm not sure if you can use a small brush to get some grease on the front bearing retainer where the throwout bearing slides or not. If you can that would probably help.

I have a 1968 in line six 292. The Z bar mount that goes on the block will mount either way. So that is mounted low, like in the picture or higher (mounted upside down), per say. What is correct? Mine looks correct mounted the other way(upside down). I have seen pictures both ways???? Thanks for any help.

I have three 292's out in the shop but I won't be able to check for a couple of days. Maybe someone else has a known stock setup they can take a picture of.....

I have mine in the lower position now. After 43 years of continuous operation and 3 different 292s, I can't be sure how the original was rigged. You have to work with what works. I tried it in the upper position and I think I had clearance issues, but then I have Clifford Reserch headers on my 292 L6, and a custom heim-joint upper clutch rod. At one point I had the machinist heat and bend a joggle in the arms of the Z-bar for clearances around headers.

I have headers on mine too. In the upper position it hits the header but looks level and correct. I will need to heat the Z bar and bend it as well. In the lower position it barely misses the header but looks un-level and doesn't look right.
