Magnaflow and Flowmaster 50 series opinions and sugestions

Hi Everyone,

I would like some opinions and suggestions on mufflers. I have a 72 k10 with a 400 sbc, The 400 has no modifications other than an intake and headers. I am wanting to do a dual 2.5 inch exhaust system, but I cannot decide on a muffler.

I have been looking at the Flowmaster 50 series because the 40 series is a little to loud and has more interior noise than I prefer. I have not heard a 50 series in person, but I have been around several trucks with the 40 series.

As for Magnaflow, I do not have much personal experience with. I would like something that has a nice deep tone at idle., and nice semi-loud, smooth tone while driving, with out wishing I had ear plugs to drive it across town. Any suggestions or opinions in case sizes would be great!

I would love to hear your personal experience, opinions, and suggestions.

Thanks,
John

A few months ago I drove a 5L Mustang back from Colorado to Saskatchewan, and it had a Magnaflow cat back system. The car had a nice deep rumble and didnt drone at any point on the trip home. Not quiet but wouldnt want it any louder..was just the right sound level. Dont know if this helps, but I give +1 for Magnaflow.

Didnt Flowmaster make a deltaflow muffler that was similar to magnaflow??

In other words, buy a Magnaflow instead of a knockoff.

John, this is what a big block breathing through a set of 14" magnaflows sounds like:

and this is what it's like in the cab when you do a monster burnout!

I never did like Flowmasters.

I run the Flowmaster 50's on my Nova, they have a good low grumble and are quite on the highway with no drone, but still sound mean with open throttle.

Hartje, do you have an X or H pipe in your exhaust system?

Thanks everyone, I appreciate the replies! I have heard of the deltaflow Flowmasters before but I wasn't sure if they were more like the Magnaflows or still chamber Mufflers.

I'm hoping you guys will keep the information going! :chevy:

Thanks again,
John

I run an X-pipe. Flotech universal X with cutouts to be exact. Its all 3" mandrel bent. I'm also running dumps before the rear axle - no tail pipes....

I'm not sure how to embed videos but here is a clip of my cars first start with the exhaust equipped.

I am running the Magnaflow's with the X pipe, 2.5" exhaust. It is very quiet, with a nice, low growl when you get on it. It is enough to tell its not stock, but I think I want to go with something louder. There is no drone, but for me, a little quiet.

Running the Magnaflows with 2.5" pipe and no X or H pipe along with tail pipes out the back. It barks at you pretty good. I like it, but thought it would be a little quieter. With the X or H pipe I'm sure it would bring the bark down. Like it so much I'm keeping as it is.

I had the flowmasters and the drone was horrible changed them out for magnaflow after 3,000 miles and love them they have a deep throaty sound at idle and bark nicely under acceleration with out the drone that the flowmaster had .I run a big block with 3 inch exhaust.

anybody have or heard the JONES FULL BOAR mufflers? I was told they sound like flowmasters but cost less than half as much.

I run spin tech mufflers. I think they sound great and I have no drone.

Here's how my Magnaflows sound on my cammed LS1. 2.5" pipes with an x-pipe. My only complaint is the Magnaflows are a tad quiet at idle, but they like to let everyone know how they sound at WOT!

Here's a vid to try to get an idea how it sounds under heavy throttle.

Spintechs, with a 5.3, a little extra cam, some head work, and the exhaust dumped right before the axle. It was fairly loud. The video was shot with my phone and probably doesn't reflect the tone accurately. Sounded good, but it was a loud while driving.

Re: Magnaflow and Flowmaster 50 series opinions and sugestions

for my ears the Flowmasters are too tinny sounding, I had them on my 66 c10and they were too loud as well.

Maybe you could try what were called "hemi mufflers" in the 70s-90s. They were oval like the Flowmasters, but good flow and low noise. FWIW
