Another axle question or two

Yesterday evening I noticed some petroleum on my inner tire. Is there a way to tell if it's the axle seal or brake wheel cylinder without taking it apart? If it turns out that it's the axle seal, am I correct thinking that I will have to remove the axle shaft to replace it, therefore I will have to take the C-clip out in the differential?

Thanks!

Yes. pull the tire and brake drum and have a look.

You could also inspect the master cyl reservoir to see if it's empty

Run your finger trough it and smell it. Both are distinct smells and texture.

Just like I taught my sons...."run your fingers through it" then smell it;) I hope the mods have a little "humor" this nite? All jokes out, yes the gear lube does have a very "skunk" odor. the brake fluid , has a stinky /sweet smell. Longhorn
