Leaky windshield in my 68
Anybody have any ideas how to properly seal a windshield? Brand new gasket and still leaks.
Thanks |
Re: Leaky windshield in my 68
You need to seal the windshield to the rubber and the rubber to the body. Butyl sealant comes in a tube for a caulking gun.

Buy a Precision Rubber brand gasket. Don't use window goo.

I never use sealant either. If you have a leak just seal 4 or 5 inches in from each top corner and down the sides about 3 inches. Did you re-seal the body seams that are under the windshield gasket before you put the windshield in? LockDoc |

LockDoc, are you saying use sealant if it leaks?

Re: Leaky windshield in my 68
I'm pretty sure the new seal in there is a Precision. The guy I bought the truck from installed it or had it installed. Don't know for sure. All I know is when it rained last I put a sheet of plastic over the top right corner of the glass and roof to see if I could stop the water from coming in and it didn't work. I'm thinking it's coming in at the top of the gasket all along the whole windshield and running along the inner part of the gasket to the right corner. This isn't just dripping a little, it's coming in about a 1/8 inch steady pour. If you look at the gasket it appears to have a pretty good contact all the way around but on the inside the gasket is puckered at the top right corner. Looks like I'll have to remove it and put a new gasket in there.

As I don't know how nice/restored your truck is, there's always a chance there were some rust holes in the window channel that weren't repaired correctly. I've had that happen on a couple vintage cars.

Sounds more like cowl rot /missing body seam sealer rather than a leaky windshield ,Time to get out the good flashlight and crawl under the dash .:chevy:

Re: Leaky windshield in my 68
Spray bottle with soap.. Spray suspect area and use an air gun, leaf blower etc from inside to find bubbles (water leak) on outside!
