1972 Blazer Original motor??

Another newbie question...

Does the motor numbers match some part of the VIN number like on some of the older Chevrolet vehicles?

I don't believe so. It will designate between a 6 or 8 cyl, but that's about it. You could look up the casting numbers on the motor and see if it matches the year of the Blazer.....

On the passenger side front deck of the block are the two codes associated with the engine. The number in large letters is the application code. It will tell you the year and month it was assembled, and give you a 3 character code which will correspond to a general application type (Mine, for instance, says 1978 police car).

SOME engines also have a smaller number stamped there, the last portion of which is the "unit number" portion of the VIN. My friends 1976 corvette has this. I couldn't tell you why or when it started.

Brian:

I know that is how it works for cars that were produced in the late 60's and 70's (maybe even farther back than this). I have a '67 Chevelle and that's how it is listed. The smaller stamping would match (if it's original) to part of the VIN #. I didn't know if that was how it worked on the Blazer also, or if it had some other type of identification. I thought that if someone had an original motor they could check to see if it matches the VIN.

Thanks for the reply.

Check out http://www.mortec.com/ - it will tell you all you want to know about casting numbers for blocks, heads, and crankshafts.

Lots of other info for chevy motors too.
