1970 C10 Hood Emblem Replacement
Got a replacement hood emblem from Brother's. What is the best way to replace? I don't want to damage paint job that came with this recent purchase. I see under hood where I can remove hood latch pin to get inside to old emblem, but can't quite reach it. Is there a tool or method to help with removal of old and replacement with new? Sorry if these questions seem elementary - this is my first attempt at trim work. Thanks.

Re: 1970 C10 Hood Emblem Replacement
Use blue masking tape on everything if you are afraid of scratching the paint. Also use it on your ratchet, or slip a piece of hose over it. The nuts retaining the emblem are easily accessible after you remove the latch plate.

Re: 1970 C10 Hood Emblem Replacement
Thanks - you mentioned nuts that secure the emblem. In the replacement piece it looks like the two stud fasteners are friction fit - do they get installed using a ratchet? If not, what do you use to force the fastener onto the stud?

I don't recall the name of the type of nuts. The are like capture nuts I think. They are hollow on the backside with a flared edge and a hole (obviously!!!) through the center, but it has a split on each side of the hole. It easily spins on and just stops the piece from moving around. They aren't meant for any serious psi clamping force.

Speed nuts I think they are called. They are a thin stamped steel nut like leftybass described.

Lefty is describing a "barrel nut" this is a misleading name because there is no threads in this style.
Google emblem barrel nut. |

Here's a link to an eBay listing for the type of nuts originally used. My Trim Parts repro bowtie hood emblem had them included. These were also used with the fender emblems. I'm not sure if the size in the eBay listing is correct for either application.

Re: 1970 C10 Hood Emblem Replacement
I just bought a bag of these nuts from NAPA auto parts for my fender emblems - easy tp use and reasonably priced too..

Re: 1970 C10 Hood Emblem Replacement
Thanks for responding - I was able to remove the old and replace it with the new. FYI - the original nuts were threaded and had to be unscrewed. The new nuts were friction fit. I did have to remove the latch plate to get to the trim piece.

Re: 1970 C10 Hood Emblem Replacement
Thanks for asking that question to the group RMawyer.. I have been wondering about that exact thing myself here for a while and I definitely could not figure it out myself no matter how many times I tried to shine a flashlight up through the hood to see how the damn thing (bowtie hood ornament) was fixed up in there...I could not see it...
