Tool storage ideas?
 

How do you guys carry basic hand tools in 64-66 C10 cab for on the road use?

Under seat, right cab corner behind seat, under hood?

What kind of tool box fits where?

Jack, lug wrench etc are under seat left side.

Looking for ideas.

Tool roll under the seat.
There IS a lot of room under the hood: An army surplus ammo can holds a lot of tools in a pretty small area.
If you can find a '50s and '60s Ford truck (including big trucks), they often have battery boxes mounted in the floors. Econoline Vans, the Dodge and Chevy vans of the era did too. They've all got about the same kind of lid--it has a D-ring recessed into the center of it that you turn and it runs locking fingers out the sides.
I've thought about mounting one in the floor in front of the passenger seat and building a box under it. There's nothing under the floor between the frame rail and the trans, and it'd fit nicely there.
If you have later-model bucket seats, if you get them from an extended cab truck they'll tip forward, so you could put the recessed box under the seat.

For that matter, you could also do all that in the bed of the truck. Just hope you aren't carrying cargo when you need to access the tools.

A small tool box under the seat has gotten me and some others out of many break downs

Thanks. These are the kind of ideas I seek. Just looking for "get her home" tool storage. Must be too used to years of driving Jeeps with stuff stashed and lashed down everywhere.

I like the side bed storage compartment idea, but that's where my second gas tank is located and wouldn't want to cut a bed if it weren't.

Under floor box idea with lid is good one.

I've seen a photo of ammo can under hood by hood hinge..but limits access to motor work.

Looks like under passenger side seat it target area.
Perhaps simply a military mechanics bag or 20mm cannon box from F-4 Phantom days will do.

Where to find a small tool box only 4" tall for under passenger side?

Under the hood on the opposite side of the radiator from the battery might work too.
Might have to relocate a couple things, but it could be done, and it wouldn't limit access to the engine.

(if you're really good, you could make a mirror-image battery tray, or cut one and reverse the mounting of it, and have a "factory" tool box hold down area!

Maybe a quick release strap could be used for the under hood ammo can tool box

Your Chevy will only leave you stranded if it feels you have doubts about it. Bringing tools is just Asking for it. ;)

It's usually not a Chevy Truck that's broken down and needs on the road repair to get home.

20 miles to grocery store here....and no cell phone coverage...lots of opportunities to help others...and winter arrived today.

ie: I also carry metric wrenches

I can't see bolting a full size tool box under the hood, maybe something like this 16x4x4 and $23

Cheap, well made (yes China)…fits perfect under passenger side of stock ‘64 C10 seat. Just right for basic break down tools…or 1911A1. I ordered another for the 55.

Hey bhc41051, where did you find the 16x4x4 orange box. That has serious possibilities too.

How about one of the all in one tool kits in a plastic case.

For years I had one made by Craftsman strapped under the passengers side of my work truck. I just screwed one end of a rubber tie down and had a loop to secure the S hook to. Beside it I had a wrench set in a roll up holder. Little to no rattle and they covered most things I broke (normally doing something stupid)

I was in the Over the Hill Gang in San Diego for years (years ago) and had a soft sided tool brief case that I carried in my vehicles. Almost every car show or get together someone would look me up for something, tape measure, wrench whatever. Wish I could find that bag on line again I'd buy it.

Thanks. HF tool kit would do it...cheap tools, $40, but adequate for most on the road repairs...even a hammer...leaving the well oiled Snap-ons in garage where they belong.

I've carried a 1/4 roll of duct tape, safety wire, zip ties, F-4 "Atomic Tape" and a tube of black silicone to get other people out of trouble...don't usually have to rescue myself.

Do you have a picture of your tool roll setup? I've started looking for a cool leather tool roll. Thought I had a good worn black one, but can't seem to find it. Would love to put together a roadside setup. Here's a couple pictures of what I've found on ebay. Kinda pricey, but sure do look good!

i swear all you would need is a 1/2 9/16 pliers and screw driver and pretty much good to work on anything on these trucks.

GM's solution in 1963. Course this version of a tool kit went for a few years.
