Painless vs other wiring kits
I have done a lot of searching and various things but most of the stuff I read or found was pretty old. To get up to speed for more recent painless wiring kits what has everyone used or recommend to use and, where to purchase? I hate electrial issues so would like to have a plug and play wiring harness. The only thing that has changed on the orginal 68 is it now has a 350 with HEI.
Thanks, |
Re: Painless vs other wiring kits
I have to do a wiring harness in my Blazer, from what I have read, I think the AAW is the cleanest, easiest out there? Just my opinion

I picked up a painless 28 circuit harness from Summit Racing for the 67-72 C10 and it is most of the way in. The connectors, with the exception of the wiper motor and column harnesses plug right in. I just took the wiper motor and column connectors off the M&H harness and used the extra loose connectors Painless supplied to make the switch. not finished yet but there isn't any mystery with the painless harness. All of the wires are marked and it goes in without any guessing. |

Re: Painless vs other wiring kits
There's nothing wrong with painless. They've built a name for themselves and put out quality products. They do however, charge more for the equivalent quality from other companies. I too, use M&H and their harness is exactly the same as AAW.

Re: Painless vs other wiring kits
M&H is 6+ months out from having one in stock.

Re: Painless vs other wiring kits
Contact AAW then..... they may have it.

Re: Painless vs other wiring kits

Re: Painless vs other wiring kits
Naturally a plug & play is the easiest way to go. I use the universal harness from Speedway for $150 & it has all the circuits I need plus a big hunk of wire left over.

I used American Auto wire and had no issuses I hate electrical work and I'm an ase certified Auto mechic

Re: Painless vs other wiring kits
I have no experience with the painless kit so I can't give you an opinion on it. I used the AAW wiring harness and it worked out perfect. I would give it a 10 out of 10. It came with GREAT instructions and plenty of extra wiring.

Re: Painless vs other wiring kits
I installed the AAW kit 510089 Classic Update so it has extra fuses and wiring for electric fan, fuel pump ect. I have EFI so it was the right kit for that. I can only speak for the kit I bought and I did buy a ratcheting crimp kit to make my life easier when installing the crimp connectors. I crimped and soldered the connectors for added peace of mind and it turned out really nice, all new wiring from head lights to tail lights. I also bought the A/C kit that was an add on to the standard kit.

Re: Painless vs other wiring kits
I also used the AAW kit. I selected AAW over painless because the reviews were just as good, but the price was less. There were a few points where the kit had too many options that I am not planning on using like electric fuel pump and GPS speedometer, and I was disappointed that it did not include provisions to keep my externally regulated alternator. Overall happy with the kit though.

Re: Painless vs other wiring kits
AAW user here as well and I was very pleased with the quality and the support. Highly recommend versus paying for a bigger name for the same quality.

Re: Painless vs other wiring kits
cant go wrong with AAW.

Re: Painless vs other wiring kits
AAW makes it an easy project, even fun. Only thing is(no matter which harness you choose), keep your original headlight switch in tact. There is only one company that makes them, and they have quality control issues!

Re: Painless vs other wiring kits
I used a painless in another project and it was rather easy but IMO the price isn't worth it. I'm in the middle of a 67 K10 build and actually found an unbuttered one in a salvage yard (I couldn't believe it myself). The wires aren't dry and will work but we'll see.
Speedway makes one as well but haven't used that one. v/r Goob |
Re: Painless vs other wiring kits
Yeah, I mainly need the dash harness so waiting to see if anyone has a 68 OEM dash harness that hasn't been all butchered up first.

Re: Painless vs other wiring kits
Ive installed all the wire kits from many MFRs; even the chinese ebay stuff too, and even made my own as needed.
Painless (as most are stating here) is the most complete and best made, also the highest price. (you get what you pay for and in this case its true) If you dont mind spending the extra dollars to have it perfect then go with them. AAW or M&H would be right below Painless and provides a very comprehensive system but with a little more finishing work. For a lesser price also. Speedmaster, quickcar, metra, EZ wire are all pretty much made by the same people with different names. and the quality is ok.... but price is less. some of the connector bodys they use are cheap and break easy. |
Re: Painless vs other wiring kits
I've used Painless on past projects, Street & Performance and other cheaper ones too.
the first two were great. the cheaper ones sucked. I told the people to spend the money but they cheaped out. some of the terminal ends failed in a short period of time and the instructions sucked too. I have an AAW for my C10 that I haven't installed yet, but at a price of $225.00 for a 21 circuit harness from a reputable company, I couldn't turn it down. Definitely going to take a little more work than Painless, but at least I don't have to see wires that I don't want to use |
Re: Painless vs other wiring kits
I need to order my aaw kit but hate electrical lol

Re: Painless vs other wiring kits
Has anyone removed a fuse terminal out of fuse box. When I purchased the truck it was wired with painless wiring. The truck was pre wired for power door/Windows cruise control and now I want to removal the terminal to prevent a short on the fuse box. Is there a special tool needed ?
