sticky steering wheel
I just bought a nice untouched '71 C20 Custom Camper that is a perfect patina project. It has a great no-cracks steering wheel but the central hub area is very sticky due to rubber getting old? Any way to fix it? When I touch it my fingers come away sticky. Thanks

You might try a product called "Goo-Gone" I use it on my steering wheels when they get sticky. It also removes self stick label adhesive. It is citrus based so it shouldn't hurt anything. It should be available at most hardware stores or home centers. LockDoc |

Is this the wheel you have. The reason I ask is because you said rubber and not plastic. So, the rubber in, the later 70s model, wheel pictured below breaks down and is pretty much junk once that starts to happen. I tried several methods to stop the wheel from bleeding oil. Finally gave up and got a temporary (grant) replacement wheel. But now I'm liking the 15" wheel.
Good luck if the wheel below is what is on your vehicle. Post a pic of your wheel. |
Re: sticky steering wheel
I've got that same steering wheel that's in the picture and ya it gets sticky pretty often and leaves black stuff on my hands. I haven't found anything to resolve the issue either, sorry. Eventually I will replace the wheel or recover it or something.

Re: sticky steering wheel
Try wiping it with baby or mineral oil and wiping most of it back off .
