Electric 66 speedo
 

Looking for info on converting my 66 factory speedo (cable driven) to a newer electric unit for my 4l80. I want it to look original. I have found info on 68-72
but not on 64-66 thanks

Your best bet is going to be trying to use the guts out of a Caprice speedo from around 95 or so. They are the only long sweeping electric speedos that I have found. At some point I'm going to try and make one work in my Nova and since its similar, I would thonk the trucks could be done too. It's mostly just trial and error to figure out everything. Good luck with it and if you try it, keep us posted on your progress.

Ok, did a little Googling, and it's a '91-'93 Caprice. Looks very close, but the truck is 100mph where as the Caprice is 80, but might be close enough to work by moving the needle down a bit since it looks like the truck has a little bit more sweep to it. Then you would just have to move the odometer, which should be doable since electric ones aren't built into the speedo like the cable driven ones are.

Ill be doing this same thing here shortly, plan to use abbott x conversion box to retain my factory gauges. pricey but ive yet to find any other options.

When wiring this type elect speedo from the 4l80 rear vss does the wiring still go to the e38 ecm. I am confused how it needs to be wired?

What year is your engine, and what's it out of? E38's will have to be tuned for a speedo output and the wire will have to be added to the harness, then your speedo will hook up to that.
I've had 4 Cable-X's and their quality has gone down on each one I bought. The first one I bought in 2001 still works perfect with over 100k miles on it, but the newest one I bought doesn't work nearly as good. Not sure why that is though. Dakota Digital makes one now though that seems easier to use and calibrate, although I have no personal experience with it. http://www.dakotadigital.com/index.c...rod/prd886.htm

Engine is from a 2008 Avalanche Trans is 2004 4l80. I am working on my wiring harness at this time. My wires from the rear speed sensor go to my T42 TCM. The wire you are speaking of that needs to be added where does it come from. thanks for your help

The wire would come from the ECM for the speedo, but requires some additional tuning to make it work. I have only done it once, and that was on an LS3. I put the wire in, had it tuned and then the guy who owned the truck thought it would be easier to buy a GPS speedo, so I never did get to see it work. You might get hold of Hart_Rod, I'm pretty sure he has his working. That said, I've never used that trans controller so I'm not familiar with it, but I would think you would have to hook up both input and output speed sensors to it. I assume it connects to the ECM somehow?

Connector 1 of the E38 pin 57 is the speed output. In a factory harness, I believe it is yellow with a black stripe (in the truck application). It's the output for the ABS system and is 128K pulses per mile. If you're using a car OS and harness the pin is not used, but you can turn it on in the tune and add the wire to pin 57 and it will be 4K pulses per mile. Unless this has changed in the last year or so, the pulses per mile is not configurable for the e38 in HP Tuners even though it appears that it is (i.e. changing the output pulses has no effect on the actual signal)

Thanks for info. What is car OS. I am using the truck harness that i have shorten up to fit the truck better.

OS = Operating System as in the "program" in your ECM.
