Conversion Harnesses: PSI, Current, or BP?
 

So I plan to purchase a new harness for my LS swap and sell of the original harness to make a few bucks back. I considered rebuilding the original harness and while I would feel comfortable with the wiring, time is not typically on my side. With two small kids at home, time in the garage is limited and what typically takes a weekend usually takes me a month.

With that said, which harness would you or have you purchased and why? The three that seem to pop up most often are PSI, Current Performance, and BP Automotive.

I've done a half a dozen LS swaps on various vehicles and have used Howell Fuel Injection with really good success. DBW and DBC worked great. Auto and T56 worked great. They all needed some level of tuning to get perfect. I've have my 98 Wrangler LS6/4L60E running for almost ten years now with a Howell harness and computer. It has been totally reliable.

I vote for current. Long story short, I bought an LSX donor truck with their harness and they helped me identify some connections by email and their response was within 24 each on two occasions. If they are willing to do that to someone that did not purchase directly to them then I will give them two thumbs up each I can :-).

Not to hijack too much but how about for a six speed auto? Preferably for stock ecu rather than aftermarket.

A good friend does a lot of LS swaps and has used numerous products including PSI which is what we used in my 56. No problems with the harness though the PCM had the wrong tune. Currently we are using BP and have been impressed.

And like LS short box mentioned, don't forget about Howell. He was a GM engineer and was there when fuel injection started.

Fuel Injection Connection -OE grade wiring and hardware, custom made any way, great instructions.

BP has a decent rep and have been hearing more folks using them. Current has had ups and downs in quality. PSI harness quality is decent but their tunes (and from what a few have told me customer service) are a little less great.

I went with a Speartech harness and I'm very impressed how nice it is. It was a little pricey but worth it. Plus great customer service too

I have a BP Automotive engine harness in my Camaro, The craftsmanship is superior to PSI, Current, Speartech, Howell, Street & Performance, & Painless, I have used a ton of Speartech harnesses in the past, They are top quality, But BP harnesses are nicer.

I am also on the bandwagon with BP. Great looking harness and fuse box.

I wouldn't pay for the Speartech harness...but I do have to give John and his team a lot of credit. They were doing harnesses for people like Nelson (NRE) back in the day when NOBODY was doing dbw compatible harnesses. Credit where credit is due. They are usually the company doing something first when it comes out...just not always the best once the benefit of hindsight exists.

I used the BP harness and fuse block and like them a lot. I will use them again on my next swap. However, I have not had any luck getting in contact with Bill after getting my harness and having a few questions, but I figured them out on my own. I called and left messages, sent emails, and used the "contact us" option on the website, with no response. The product they make is great though.

BP All the way, Bill can be tricky to get a hold of at times. When he does answer his phone, he has no issues with spending as much time needed to answer all your questions and he's so COOL about it. He did apologize for not being able to answer his phone 24/7 but you gotta figure, if he's answering everyone's questions the way he does and doesn't make you feel like you're a burden, he's doing that every time he answers the phone. Not to mention that he's building some quality harnesses and it shows. I got a hold of him last week, after 3 phone calls, I spoke with Bill for about 20 minutes in regards to some custom measurements required for my current build, not once did he rush me or such. I also like the fact that he uses high end crimpers and other tools for his work, being an I&C Tech myself, I understand the difference between a $20 tool that'll get the job done and a $400 that just makes it right. Another cool option with BP is that He'll tune your PCM or sell you the one you need, that's one less outfit you need to work with. Just makes way more sense to me. Hope this helps.

i looked up bp and i got a question. it says he will rewire your exhisting harness as well, is there any disadvatage of goin this route vs. buying one of his conversion harnesses?

When I first talked to him about a harness, he told me he is no longer doing the rewiring service, only making new harnesses.

Same story here. Re-working a factory harness is so time consuming it is actually faster / better for him to build you a new one to your spec.

I believe has has started doing the re-wires again.

For the minor price difference (about $100), I wouldn't even consider it. I would gladly pay the extra for all new wiring, connectors, etc and not have to worry about brittle wiring or connectors breaking, etc.

I started with Howell and used them again with good results, and now looking for a third harness from them............. but I am open to others, good info.

What about the price of the (no options, length,covering etc) different shops listed.

We have bought so many PSI harnesses where I work that we are now a dealer for them so we get a bit of a price discount. We have done probably a half a dozen LS swaps here at work and used PSI harnesses from the start and had nothing but good luck with them. We are having someone local to us do the tuning though, so I can't comment on their tuned computers that they sell.

I just placed my order with PSI last week, Ill be able to place a review in a few weeks. Also got their pre tuned ECM with vats and all removed. We'll see!

Just to add to BP Automotive, I recently placed a harness order with them and had some questions. Got Bill (the owner and builder) on the phone within a few rings, and he was very patient and helpful while we chatted for about 20 minutes going over the questions I had. A+ for customer service. Just don't try to get your support through email. :lol:

I sent my donor harness & pcm to SpearTech for them to rework harness and flash my pcm. I deleted some of the connectors such as evap & egr. it was returned ahead of schedule and was a simple plug in & crank...no issues...my only problem was my fault, I didn't think about how the truck harness runs over top of intake manifold and makes for an ugly install. I wish I would have had them lenghthen the harness so I could have rerouted..but again that was not Speartechs fault.
