garage organization.....cabinets??
i have my compressor/tool box/tool cart against the wall in my garage and in need of more storage space. im wanting to add some wall cabinets above all of it. any pix or suggestions of some setups? was thinking a 2door cabinet, corner cabinet and 2 more 2door cabinets to hover overhead. i like the metal storage cabinets sold at HD/Lowes but not a fan of the prices lol anything creative out there for the budget-minded/new broke homeowners? :)

Re: garage organization.....cabinets??
I would go with the metal cabinets, might cost more, but unless the cabinet boxes are made from plywood and not press-board, you might run into problems with the humidity destroying the boxes and causing them to sag. You could also look into what the local Restore or Habitat for Humanity has for cabinets. Sometimes these were made from good materials and just need some painting.

Re: garage organization.....cabinets??
I'm in the construction industry on the supply side. I've been lucky enough to know the contractors that were remodeling two schools and was able to get roughly 48 feet of base cabinets with counter tops and around 30 feet of wall cabinets. They were happy to get rid of them so they didn't have to deal with throwing them away. One of these days I'll get some pictures and post them.

Re: garage organization.....cabinets??
+1 more on the kitchen cabinets, they can be bought for a song or obtained free and the you just paint them to your tastes.
mine get a coat of rustoleum in aluminum. |
Re: garage organization.....cabinets??

Re: garage organization.....cabinets??
For sure contact "Habitat for Humanity " up here they won't take the "old rougher" donations.
Try CL or up here it's Kijiji , you could post "offer to remove them",less damage to them.... We needed storage,so I built "a" shelve in one side of the garage Its 8 feet tall,8 feet long,4 feet wide. The floor and three full sheets of 3/4 inch plywood are the "shelves". 6 - 8 foot PT 4X4s for legs.notched out for 2X4s for the plywood to sit on. |

Re: garage organization.....cabinets??
My garage came with 1950's or so metal cabinets along the back wall (floor models). I plan to paint them red and black, like Craftsman tool chest colors. I think once my garage is cleaned up and renovated, the cabinets will provide enough storage space for all my sockets and other tools.
I have a Craftsman tool chest my dad bought me over a decade ago but I've never used it. I am thinking about building a welding shop on my parents' property and if I do, I might move that cabinet over there. Space is a premium in my garage and with all those metal cabinets, I really don't need the tool chest. Yes, check with Habitat for Humanity, your local trade paper, maybe stop by and ask your local school board, and Craigslist. Salvation Army is another choice for old cabinets. You could also build your own set up, I'd think as long as the wood was painted it would hold up well. I plan to build a large number of wooden shelves for my garage, painted red (of course). |

I had a friend help me make these. (well I helped him make them)!
It was literally a couple sheets of MDF and I don't put liquids in them so the wood should last a long time. Maybe a couple hundred bucks after all is said and done. Could have saved a lot on hardware but after they get painted this spring the theme should all match after the sheetrock is completed. I also bought these Vidmar cabinets for cheap $125-150 a piece) from a local guy that tears down buildings. Deals are out there just keep looking around and watching for them. Here are a few pics of when I put them up until I take them down to sheetrock this spring. Mike |

Heck at that price, I'd sell them all! Lol
I should also share some of the racks I got at the same time! I got 5 sections like you see here and 10 smaller racks 4'x4' that connect sideways. Can't wait for a building to house my mini warehouse! I'm certainly not trying to brag here. Just showing what patience and persistence will get you if you stay focused. Good luck to the original poster on finding his garage organization gear. Merry Christmas to all. |
Re: garage organization.....cabinets??
Old refrigerators, file cabnets and old desk. I decorated with plenty of antiques so they fit in.
Some people know what these things are worth, sometimes you can haul them off. |
Re: garage organization.....cabinets??
