Carport in a shop/garage
 

Anyone turned a carport into a shop/garage think about pouring a concrete floor setting up a carport and use it till get the funds to build a actual shop/garage then use this one for fab shop/storage/paint shop or something. what all did you modifications or tricks to make a decent shop/garage I need something to work out of kind of on a tight budget for now any help or information would be great help picture would be great also thanks

My first thought is to make sure it has enough power to run anything you might put in it in the future.

I'm going to put a good breaker box in with 220/240 in it I'll probably set a pole with a meter and a 400amp service so when I build a big shop/garage power will be ready for it to because we're the two will be they will be close enough to pick power up from the same disconnect box without any kind of crazy stuff

depends a lot on the carport
POS aluminum carport or a real carport with trusses and shingle roof?
way back when the dinosaurs roamed, i lived in a pos mobile home in a pos mobile home park
it had the nicest oversized 2 car trussed w/shingled roof carport complete with 9 ft ceilings and concrete slab
all it lacked was walls

My house had a car port at some point but I bought it after they had walled it off and put up a door. It works as a 3/4 car garage, it's just shy of 8 feet wide and 17 feet long. I haven't put the k5 in there yet but when it gets back from paint it will be in there. No room to open the doors, and there will only be a foot on each end of the truck to the wall/door.

If i am not mistaken the cost of the concrete is going to be more than the building. If you really are concerned about budget, i would just do the footing for the posts. Put down some gravel, or traffic bond for the floor, then as funds become available do sections of the floor. At least with the gravel down, you might start to compact it, and help to reduce the concrete work required.

that is a pre-engineered building kit
by the time you have a footing, slab and utilities run, the walls and roof are the easy part
if money is tight then build 28x20 now and double it when funds come available
if you live in an area that you need to heat or cool your shop, stud wall and trusses are most cost effective
stud walls are easy to insulate and run utilities in

i've never been a pole barn advocate unless it's a storage building
you spend as much building walls in a pole barn to where you should have just gone with stud walls in the first place

I looked at a house that was a converted carport to garage,1 wide /2 long.
In this case the garage attic was still open to the house,not good.(fire/gasses)
A (removed basement fireplace) stack still went threw basement wall to the garage roof beside an old window that could open,were concerns...

But a carport added after would not have these prob.
It was 3 or 4 posts in concrete for support before.
looked like the in-between post foundation strips, added after ,were heaving.
I'd pour the support posts as a one strip,floor later?
bad oil smelling stained asphalt was left inside for the garage floor.

I found a used one that's 28X28 with some extra steel to make the legs longer and I believe enough to make trusses to make it 40 long and it only boxed in on one end and side so I can use it for the roof then box the side in later but yes heat is a must ac probably not happening yes concrete is going to be high but I can get the carport cheep I just have to take it down so I'm hoping what I save on it will make up for the concrete I was hoping for something kinda of a budget build as I go a floor and and a roof and I can add sides and wiring and all that good stuff as I go

I have a fully inclosed one with 2 roll up doors I use to keep trailer, tractor and mowers in. I don't see why it would not work.
