Original motor?
I'm taking my valve covers off today to replace the gaskets. I've heard that you can find numbers somewhere in there that will tell me where my motor was made at. Does anyone have any more information on where they would be at or anything else? Thanks!

Re: Original motor?
The casting numbers on the cylinder heads, will only tell you what the cylinder heads are from. The number on the block, behind the drivers side cylinder head will tell you what your engine is from.
I like this list for cylinder heads http://www.nastyz28.com/sbchevy/sbch.php This is where the engine id is found http://speednik.com/files/2013/09/chevyasylum-com.jpg |
Re: Original motor?
Those raised "casting numbers" will give a general idea of when or what. For the where, and more specifics, you need the stamped suffix numbers on the front pad. Look at the image and see the link below:

Re: Original motor?
^^^ Sadly, no. There is no VIN suffix on the trucks.
The three letter code will tell you what year and transmissions of truck (or non-truck) it came with. That, combined with a reasonable looking date code, is as close as you can get. The trucks do not have a serial or sequence number stamped on them. So for mine, I can decode to "1970 Truck 402 w/ TH400" and see that the engine is dated a couple of months prior to the truck build, so it's probably original. But you can never prove it conclusively. |
Re: Original motor?
Thanks for the correction^^^
Knew that but had forgotten. I work with cars more than trucks actually. |
Re: Original motor?
I think I found the casting number... It's 338882. Does that sound right?

Re: Original motor?
That 882 number is off your heads?, most likely not original yet chevy later year. Check those against the links for the specs.
1970-80 333882 350,400 1.94 1.5 76 cc is that correct??????? |
