62' windshield question
 

The windshield on my 62' needs to be replaced due to being sand blasted and foggy. I got a price of $360 installed. Does this sound reasonable? My truck also needs a new windshield gasket strip, which I can buy separately. My current gasket has the stainless trim in it, the glass shop said that if i reinstall a gasket with the s/s strip, it would cost me another 5 or 6 hours of labor than just a standard all black gasket. Really?

Oh, also, before I do the new windshield, I would like to take the old one out in my garage so if the metal work under the gasket needs any work, I can get it done before I bring it to glass shop. Is there any tricks to know to make removing the windshield easier? And also, if I use a straight rubber gasket, as compared to the gasket with the s/s trim, does this make my truck less valuable? Thanks

360.00 sound reasonable. I got a price of 400.00 installed and Me supply the gasket. 300.00 for the glass,100.00 labor. Razor knife the old one out. I can't answer about the trim as mine don't have it.

to take it out use a razor knife , and cut the rubber away from the pinch weld until you can push the glass out.

some shops find the trim difficult to install, but all they need to do is put the trim in the rubber, and then put the rubber on the w/s, and then install.... really shouldn't take them 5 more hours.....

corts 60 did a real good write up on installing his w/s with trim at home , I will try to find the link for you , and maybe you can show it to the shop , so they know how to go about the process....

all modern shops do anymore is glue stuff in, so I suggest trying to find an old shop, and hopefully one with some old employees in their 60's that know what they are doing, and how to deal with the old vehicles that have rubber gaskets.

For that price it is "green" tint and not clear original which is a lot more. At one point clear was $1600. If the green don't bother you go for it. Careful on installer, some will not cover glass if they break it.

I agree with Jon. It does not take 5-6 hours to install the trim. It may take 20-30 minutes to install it into the gasket before the whole assembly is installed into the truck.

If you have any restoration shops in your area, they may be able to recommend a glass installer.

Well, I don't like the idea of the green tinted strip at all but not liking the thought of $1600 for a clear windshield, guess I have to ponder that one over....Jonz, thanks for the tip, I will search and find Corts 60's thread, print it off and bring it to the glass shop and see what they say. When I order a gasket seal, is the seal that will except the s/s trim piece the same seal you would use if you didn't have the trim? Thanks

the second link in my post is the right one.
the gasket is either with or without stainless, 2 different gaskets.
so you need to decide before you order if you want trim or not...
cort mentioned that a precision gasket was the best.

I had my new windshield and original rear class installed for $220 here in central Texas. To me $350 sounds a little high but that might be right for your area. My windshield cost me $200 and I got the rear installed for $20. So I could't pass it up. Is that price with a new front windshield?

$360 is the price of the new front glass and installation, I need to supply the gasket. That price was for installing the windshield with a non s/s trim piece.
