1966 C10 Project Truck
 

Hey guys, been poking around here a little over the last couple of years. 2.5 years ago, I almost picked up a 64 shortbed stepside pickup but wound up buying another wheeler instead. This year, my girlfriend has been looking for a few months to secretly buy me a project truck that was as original as possible and something that I could teach her about cars and trucks. She didn't fully surprise me like she wanted but she found a neat little 66 shortbed stepside inline 6 3 on the tree that hadn't been messed with. Looked at it and she needs some work and rust repair but it's still pretty solid and the price was right so I loaded it on the trailer and drug it home the other night. It's still on the trailer now but here's a few pictures of it.

It needs the prior rust repair redone, it will be getting new floor pans and a driver's side rocker panel

First order of business will be to get it up and running and driving again, won't take much! After that, we will tackle the interior and have some fun with it while tinkering. I can't wait to dive into it!

Nice project to start with. Especially when you G/F wants to be apart of it and gets you the truck. Look forward to watching the build. :chevy:

Thanks guys, she's definitely a keeper!

It's still sitting on the trailer, it should be off on Saturday. It's been so much fun coming down the street and seeing the old pickup in the driveway. It's so cool!

It's been pretty hard concentrating on work these last few days so I've been looking around at patch panels and such. Obviously the driver's floor needs to be replaced and the rocker does as well. The passenger side does as well but it's not as bad.

Since the weatherstrip lip is gone on the driver's side, what patch panel would I need to get that has that built in?

If I'm not mistaken, your outer rocker will have the lip for the door weatherstripping to hook on.

It wasn't raining when I got home today so I wired the choke shut, no cable, and fired it up. I think I found where all the oil went and why the dipstick was dry. I'm hopeful it's not as bad as it looks but we will see later.

Drove it yesterday! Pulled it off the trailer and into the driveway. Didn't smoke nearly as much which is great. I'm going to let it go through a heat cycle or 2 and see what happens. Was stoked to drive it and now we can start tinkering! First order of business will be rebuilding the carb :)

Nice truck. You're right up the road from me.
I remember my first drive, around the block a few times, backed up to the shop and well,,, the rest is in the works.

Thanks! I was watching one of your builds a couple years ago, nice work :metal:.

I picked up parts for a tune up the other day and thought I would swap the coil over on lunch. The new coil is too big for the bracket and it started raining so I slapped it back together. I'm taking my Jeep out playing this weekend so I had to move it to the other side of the driveway. Had some fun doing it too :metal:

She's such a cool old truck, I love it!

So I'm fairly green to the manual choke world. I hooked the choke cable up and I can turn the choke on but I can't turn it off. Poking around on Google, it appears that I may have a later model carburetor on it but I don't know for sure.

Does it look like I'm missing any pieces?

Looks like its missing the cable support. And to reply to a previous post I'm actually the Son and that was my Dad videoing. haha
EDIT: That is a later model monojet carb.

Oh, right on. Thought you were older from your knowledge :metal:

Looks like this is the "hot air" style choke that I'm used to from my 77 K10 with a Q-Jet. Hmmm, I will have to see if the manifold has any provisions for the spring and housing that this style should have like in this link.

Thats a tough old army truck you have there. Your GF did you a big favor finding that for you.

About your choke... make sure that your air cleaner stud isn't screwed in so far that it restricts the movement of the choke butterfly. Ask me how I know ;)

Thanks! I wish the choke was that easy, but I will definitely check that again!

I just ordered a bunch of stuff from LMC and then some AMD patch panels from Summit. Time to start working on it :metal:

I'd just fabricate a bracket that will hold the cable in place so you can open and close the choke. Did that with my 66 when I put a 2 barrel on my 292. Didn't look perrty but hey it worked. lol :chevy:

Not a huge update but it's progress none the less. I've been scouring craigslist for some rally wheels ever since I brought the truck home and a couple weeks ago, I finally found a set that would work! I also picked up some darn near brand new 235/75R15 Goodyear Silent Armors for dirt cheap as well. I'm hoping to have the wheels cleaned up this weekend and on the truck next week!

I've also picked up a rebuilt carburetor for it so maybe I'll even have it running proper soon too :metal:

Just tinkering for a quick second before heading over to tinker on my buddy's 68 F100 Coyote swap truck. Learning that the park lights go off with the headlights was a great thing to learn, maybe I don't have that much wiring to go through afterall!

Got a bit done this weekend, wanted to work on it yesterday too but my buddy needed help pulling the motor from his F100 so I helped him get that done. Today was paint wheels and pull the old girl in the garage day. My pertronix electronic ignition showed up this morning so I went crazy and installed that and my new coil, cap and rotor. She runs like a dream now! Here's a video ripping it through the neighborhood, like I said I get to be a goober when I'm excited!

I'll get the new tires and wheels mounted and balanced tomorrow and hopefully on the truck tomorrow night. Next is to tackle my list to get it roadworthy! Super stoked on my progress :chevy:
