Axles, gun drilled or not?
 

Thinking about buying a complete Moser 12 bolt for my truck. Spool, 35 spline axles, 9" axle bearing, etc. Have a buddy telling me to get gun drilled axles. I am worried that would be a mistake as the truck is street driven much more then it sees the track. I imagine the shock of pot holes wouldn't be kind to a drilled axle. Just curious if any of yall had an opinion on this. Any input is appreciated.

Sure.... If you were looking for every ounce of weight savings, and every pound of torque,,, But anything less than a max-effort 2000HP Pro-Stock, Pro-Mod Top Dragster all out competition vehicle,, I really would rather have a solid axle.

Besides, The reverse wrap-up the axle is subjected to on the street (with a spool or posi) is not going to be nice to an axle as you said. Taking material away sure seems counterproductive.

I agree. I was trying to explain to my buddy that if I was worried about every ounce of weight I wouldn't be racing an all steel bodied truck. I think I'll save the money on the gun drilled axles. Thanks for your input Marv.

If you want to save a couple lbs in that area could do star flanges, likely not worth the cost/rotating weight savings but worth at least 10 bragging rights hp, lol.

Seems to me that gun drilling, swiss cheezing, and the like is more often than not a way of the past in all but a few select situations. Yes weight savings is great, but more and more we're finding ways of using lighter and stronger materials, or using engineering to make a product which uses a material more effectively.

Plus, drilling like 500 holes in something is PITA, though machine-turning a finish is worse.

Thanks for the input guys. I'm going to steer clear of the gun drilled axles. All I plan to do with the truck is play on the street a little and try out the 7.0 index at the local track. I'm hoping with a gear change it will do a bit better then 7.0's on motor.

I assume you mean 1/8?
7's on motor in the 1/4 would be a little more than we're talking lol.

Haha. Yeah 1/8. It's a pump gas iron headed sbc. Has Been 6.6xx on 150 shot with a 1.4xx 60' Have yet to make a N/A pass.
