1972 1 ton project

Hey everyone I picked up a new project also completely new to trucks. It's a 1972 c30 with a flatbed. The truck is in very good shape and also drives. My plans are to lower the front with drop spindles and leaf over axle for the rear. For the drive train I got rid of the 4 speed and Chevy small block and picked up a 2002 duramax setup. The one thing I didn't understand is the rear is a dually and the front isn't. I believe someone must of swapped spindles and rotors to a 3/4 ton. I know it's a true 1 ton because of the vin.
Thanks everyone

Nice truck! It'll be a real nice ride with a Duramax in it!

Nice looking truck. I'm confused by your question about the front end.

Thanks everyone for the comments. On the front the rims are different. They are not dually wheels. Did the trucks ever come this way?

Posted up some more pictures of the progress. I fab up some rear frame notches, purposely made them big so I can eventually bag it with a 4 link. Still have cut more into the frame and box the notches in.

Re: 1972 1 ton project

It does seem odd that the front doesn't have dual type wheels and in the pics it seems the front isn't a dual setup. My guess is someone converted the rear. Maybe the SPID has clues?
That said it seems a bit sad that someone would take a one ton and bag it, or remove the capacity it was meant to have. Your truck.

Re: 1972 1 ton project

I agree that most likely the rear was swapped in, but could have gone either way. Glad to see you are using the truck whether it's bagged and lowered or not!

I have an '02 Duramax and it's pretty awesome. Just be aware, all the LB7 need injectors eventually, and some sooner and more often than others. This is a $$$ proposition when you get around to doing it BTW.

With the frame reinforced and with large air bags I will be able to tow a lot more then the truck was designed for. I'm building air ride trailer to tow my other build.

I see quite often the 69 70 hood on the 71 72 truck[two hood emblems]My one ton was that way as well. Jim

Nice. Amazing how big that transmission is! Most of the guys who swap the Duramax into cars run either a 4L80E or a TH400 with a Gear Vendors OD on the rear, and you can see why!

Re: 1972 1 ton project

i saw a 66 1 ton on kijiji the other day, dreamed about lowering and swapping a duramax into it. pretty much exactly what you are doing. then i remembered i dont have any use for a tow vehicle just yet, maybe some day. will be following this build for sure!

Now I'm in.

Kinda thought about doing that to Homer some day if I kept him. I have a 2006 Duramax I daily drive since 2006. Great motors especially with that Allison behind em.
Yeah

Re: 1972 1 ton project

The transplant in the 66 would look awesome, got some more progress done today. I didn't have to cut to much, I trimmed the fire wall a bit but thats about it. Since the truck is going to be on air I wanted to keep the engine above the frame as much as I could. I know will have to make a transmission tunnel to make room for the drive shaft. I ended up using the stock engine mounts just had to modify them a bit also modified the transmission cross member.

This is going to be good.

Are you converting the Column and Hydro boost from the duramax to the 72?.

Great build

Yup I was thinking of using the steering column and hydro boost for this truck. That's awesome yeah when I found the truck I jump on it asap. I also found out the truck was an old provincial truck for 12 years in the environment department. I guess rolling coal would be kinda cool in an x environment truck.

The 2500 HD 8.1 with allison I had came with a 2 inch body lift from the factory, supposedly I was told anyway it was to help clearance on the transmission with some of the first gen HD trucks..

I do recall the trans cover to be slightly wider as well though.

Hey guys its been awhile,
just wanted to post some more pictures of the truck. I did get around welding up some cab corners and rockers, and finished up my rear 4 link I designed.

That is looking very nice! Do you plan to change the hubs out up front and put dually wheels up there?
