California Gas?
 

I just changed out the gas tank sending unit and noticed the brass float is now black. It has been in the tank for less than a year and the sending unit started to not read correctly. Granted I've only run a few tanks of gas since then, but has anyone run into this? I did add a fuel stabilizer to the gas a year or so ago since it had been sitting for so long.

I have the original sending unit/brass float in my 68. I pulled it a few weeks ago when I was testing the gauge, and the float was also black now. It is still functional and does not leak so I reinstalled it. I do not use fuel additives, and run 91 octane gas. Are you sure the problem is the sending unit?

Alcohol in the gas turns floats black and eventually ruins them.

If the float has a tiny pinhole leak it can partially fill with fuel, causing an incorrect reading. Check for leaks around the recess in the float where the steel rod wraps around it. If you remove the float and shake it you can hear if there's fuel in it. I attempted repairing my original brass float (also largely turned black) a couple times and both times the fuel ate through the supposedly fuel-proof sealant I used. So I swapped for a plastic float - there's a Jeep model that's precisely the same - and no problems.

You can still buy real regular (non ethanol) gas here in Tn also high octane race fuel at a few stations close to the race tracks .:chevy:

Yeah, we can buy Cam II here also...for $8 a gallon! no ethanol-free here, unless you make a special trip that burns 1/4 tank. I'd say the writing is on the wall and I'm sad to say those with the luxury of an option won't for long. They push is to move toward more ethanol. Sad but I feel it's true. That's why lobbies representing the old car hobby are working hard to fight it every day.

There is a station here in town that claims that there premium doesn't have ethanol but it sure smells like it does. My rigs burn fuel fast enough that I don't have to worry about it going bad though.

Another beauty of CA gas is that it is $3 a gallon for the low octane stuff, while neighboring states (AZ) are paying $1.89 for the low octane. During the month of Dec,
So Cal gas prices actually went up over .40c while the rest of the country was dropping. oh how I don't like the rip off...

I just got home from a two week road trip across the country. I never paid more than $1.89 a gallon until I got back to CA. I topped the tank off at the AZ/CA border for $1.89 and 7 miles later on the CA side regular was $3.49. I really wish I could move out of this state...

lol on the way home from picking up my truck i forgot to fill up in Kingman, AZ when it was $1.89/gal then needed to get fuel in Needles, CA.... at $4.99/gal

Some of our QT's and a couple other stations still carry the "good stuff" here but you literally pay a premium.... pic I took during lunch. Been trying it out in my new Z71. If fuel mileage doesn't improve I'll go back to the 40 cent cheaper stuff, but it's nice to be able to put it in the C10, mustang, and lawnmower. It says "No Ethanol" on the left... was trying to take pic quick before people though I was weird.

Some (probably a fair amount) of the added cost for gas in California comes from the additional refining that is required by the state. California exports a lot of gas out of state that does not go through the additional refining processes, and it sells in those states for the lower costs that are being shown in this thread.

Yeah, I would go nuts knowing everyone else was paying half or less than what I was in like... EVERY OTHER STATE, especially with as much as I love to drive. Don't think I'd want to live there...

I wish! Cheap bus fair and free lunches seem to be increasing the population here.

Hey, I had to drain the gas(and I use that term loosely here) out my lawn mower this weekend. This used to never happen to me. You should have heard me cuss.... even the raunchiest on this board would have learned a few new ones!!!:lol:
