Anybody have a vehicle lift at home?
 

I've been looking around and there's a lot of nice set-ups. I think I like the 4 post ones better because they look more solid and secure, but there are some 2 post rotary lifts that look cool too, and seem to allow more work to be done in different places on the vehicle ( as in not driven onto the lift making brakes and suspension impossible

I have a BendPak and I'm the second user of the lift and its great. Honestly you can pick them up cheap from craigslist and get them installed. Forklifts are the shizz when setting up lifts. much much easier. one person job

I have had a 2 post lift for about 6 or 7 years and I love it. I sold enough stuff on e-Bay to pay for it. With the 2 post lift you have to make sure you have the concrete thickness to support it. When I had the floor poured in my building I had the concrete increased to a thickness of 6" in the area where my lift is. It sure is nice not to have to lay on the floor to work under my vehicles....

I have both. I use the four post most.

They both have advantages. If working on wheel areas the two post is better. If working on things that might involve clearances the four post is better.

I use the two post for lifting bodies, beds, cabs etc. off the frame

I do, last year I put one up, two post so I could work on anything on the bottom of the truck. I should have purchased it along time ago. A must have for the middle aged chevy truck man. I got this one after a lot of looking around.

I have a Bendpak XPR 10. I decided on it after a lot of reading on garagejournal. You can't go wrong with it for certified 10k 2 post. I had to special order red though.

Yep, I bought a second hand Bishmon asymmetrical/symmetrical lift years ago. One of the best 2 posts lifts I've ever run across. It's very heavy duty. I installed it myself with my John Deere tractor forks. I have no idea how anyone does without one.

Mr. Turner, there are optional wheel lifts to go on the 4 post lifts. I have a relative that does chevy transmission rebuilds and he has one with the individual wheel lifts.

I agree, they both have their uses but I think if i could only have one it would be a 2 post.

I have some backyard buddies 4 posts that have served me well for 10 years now. If you get a four post just get the jacking plates and you can still do brakes and such.

Wow these are awesome so far. It always seemed to me to be one of those things that would be great to have, but just too expensive. But I'm seeing really nice ones between 1500-3000 bucks installed. I'm thinking a 4 post with jacks as someone pointed out earlier would be the way to go for me.

I have had a Rotary 2 post installed for nearly 20 years. I wouldn't be without a lift.

I prefer the 2 post.

4 post take up a lot of room and are not as versatile to use.

What are some of the ceiling heights you guys have? I know at least a 12' would be ideal but is it very practical with a 10' ceiling?

I'm just a hobbyist....occasional user.........I got this one delivered for 2K...installed it myself.

I have a low clearance lift in a garage with 10 ft ceiling. I wish I had 12 ft ceilings but it still is worth every penny to have a lift. When working under the truck I just use a rolling chair to work from instead of standing. When lifting a vehicle you just need to watch the roof. Most cars are fine but the truck cant go quite as high. I just didnt take the ceiling into account when I built the garage. The lift is one of the tools that I kick myself for not getting sooner.

I bought my 9k lb 2 post lift off craigs a few years ago for $1k and installed it myself. I really wanted a 4 post (and still do) just did not want to tie up that much space when not being used. My ceilings are 16' so I have no issues but I would say 12' min. height for no issues otherwise you just have to be careful when raising tall vehicles.

I look at my lift as extra storage. I keep my mower on a trailer. This winter I put a car on the lift and stored the lawn mower underneath. When I need the lift I just rolled the lawn mower out.

My Bishmon is a single cylinder lift with a chain that runs across the top to the opposite side. I have 12 foot ceilings but had to run my chain channel across the top of my ceiling joists. The height was perfect. I simply wired a photo eye in the control circuit across the top so that when the top of my truck breaks the photo beam it shuts the lift down.

I've never considered a lift since my garage is the basic 8' suburban ranch and worse w/ a hip roof so its descending on 3 sides.
I'm thinking maybe a cable and pulley system over the peak could allow me to remove the ceiling? Heh, I think it can't work, due to instability, but please respond.
This is more how to rearrange the building to the lift than the lift sorry.

Love my 2 post. 4 post would be okay for storage or doing exhaust, but the two post can do that and then some.

2 post Rotary here. Makes removing and installing a blazer tub literally a 1 man job.

I would love to have a 2 post lift but only have 10' ceiling in my shop. I've though about pouring an outside pad beside the shop or maybe just an addition in the future. Right now I use a pair of Gray Mfg. TNT-550 7 ton end lifts. They lift a truck high enough you can sit on a roll around stool under the truck but not stand.
