Contact Paper for Interior Woodgrain?
 

Has anyone used Contact Shelf Liner to replace the woodgrain on the instrument cluster, glovebox and door panels??? If so, can you please advise on the results??

I picked some up for like $5 at my local hardware store, it's a pretty dead-on match for the woodgrain... But it appears a little thin and I don't know how it will hold up in tHe heat / cold or over time....

Hoping for some info before I start to peel and stick. I attached a pic of it on the glovebox but I havent stuck it on there yet :metal:

the texture won't be correct, it will feel like contact paper. BUT, it is a pretty good match visually. Can always rip it off if you don't like it.

Thanks. the texture is pretty close. I mean, we are talking about fake woodgrain to begin with LOL

I have a tip that requires some steady hands but, the adhesive backed glue will adhere much better if you bake the glovebox door in an oven just enough to get it really warm (but not too hot to touch obviously) then take your pre-cut liner and begin in one corner then slowly but evenly lay it out flat. The glue will bond MUCH better. But-be sure the surface is 100% free of any dirt/dust particle as well as paint defects-any surface imperfection will be magnified if you attempt to lay the contact material over it.

When I think of contact paper I think of curled edges. It will be exposed to heat about double what a kitchen drawer never sees. Some see fake wood as tacky, so what does that make a cheap fake woodgrain job... that I think will fail? They look fine w/o the woodgrain. If I did anything, I'd be sure it would hold up. How much are the ready-cut mylar pieces?

I'd be afraid of it bubbling or peeling. I only use automotive grade vinyl, either 3M di-noc or Avery brand vinyl. I prefer Di-Noc, but its higher priced. Here was the fourth door "door panel" I had to engineer for my crew cab. I used Di-Noc and 3M primer 94 for better adhesion.

My dad tried it years ago on a glove box, it bubbled from the heat of the cab temperature in the summer
