4 speed install?

Im changing over from the3speed manual to a sm465 4spd manual trans. This is a 2wd truck. Question for those that have installed a clutch in a 4 spd truck is how to get the trans out and in. Do i pull the trans off the bell housing 1st or pull trans and bell housing out as one complete unit. And reinstalling what tricks work well to get this all back together, im doing this in my garage. Its been years, but i use to use long dowel pins for upper ears off m21's to slide them into the bell housing on the back of the motor in the car. I already have the correct bell housing and the high hump trans tunnel to install.

Separate them the 465 weighs about 200 lbs by it's self and laying on your back it will feel like 400 lbs. do you have a trans jack? harbor freight has these and a 20% off coupon makes them pretty cheap and it could save you from bending the new pressure plate fingers :chevy:

Watch those Harbor freight coupons, they usually say cannot be used on jacks and other fun stuff. Still not a bad price. I have one of their $80 3ton lo pro floor jacks and it has been perfect. I tried the coupon and it was a no go.

I have my motorcyle jack that should work well. The only thing that confused me is the lower trans to bell housing bolts, they bolt from the inside of the bell into the trans.

You can reach up in there and get em out once ya take the inspection cover off the bottom of the bellhousing. probably get those out before the top ones.

Be sure to remove your tranny tunnel cover before you do anything. The SM465 top loader pokes up through the cover and you won't be able to get it stabbed onto the bellhousing with the cover on. At least that was how it was on my 4x4 Blazer.
