Transmission options 69-72 Blazers
Hi guys - I have been doing lots of reading on these forums for quite a while and I have learned so much from all the members. I decided to finally create an account and thank everyone and also ask a question.
Was a turbo 400 transmission available in any year Blazer from 67-72? I know the SPID is marked turbo-hydramatic and some people debate that the asterisk (*) next to turbo-hydramatic means a turbo 400... but does anyone know for sure if they came with turbo 400s? I've looked at the GM heritage site and I don't see anything there that says 400 was available. I have looked in booklets for GM salesmen for 1972 and didn't see anything there. I don't see anything in the red book. Anyone know for sure? |
Re: Transmission options 69-72 Blazers
I know my frame has holes for the crossmember to mount further back and some people use these for a 700r. The front crossmember can be moved forward as well. I would think with these extra holes drilled they may have had an option for the th400.

Re: Transmission options 69-72 Blazers
turbo 400
was not an option |
Re: Transmission options 69-72 Blazers
I believe the 400 was only used with the big block and maybe 3/4 tons too but since all Blazers were 1/2 tons and no big block probably no 400's.

Re: Transmission options 69-72 Blazers
Thanks guys. I guess this deepens the mystery as to why there is an asterisk * next to turbo-hydramatic on the blazers. I know some of the guys here have said they swear they have seen turbo 400s behind small blocks from the factory in the other trucks. But if the 400 was never an option available for the blazer then why the asterisk in the SPID on the blazer models? strange

Re: Transmission options 69-72 Blazers
maybe a 400 behind a 350 with the 3/4 ton trucks?
|
Re: Transmission options 69-72 Blazers
The TH350 wasn't available until 1970(?) in trucks. So there are plenty of prior trucks with 350/TH400 combinations.

Re: Transmission options 69-72 Blazers
Since the Th350 wasn't available until 70, was there no automatic options in 69 blazers?
|
Re: Transmission options 69-72 Blazers
Are we talking 4x4's only? My '69 short step is a factory TH350. My '72 3/4 ton C20 Suburban with a small block is a TH350. My '70 GMC C2500 big block was a TH400.
But the TH400 was NOT available in a 4x4 until at least '73 and I think it was actually '77 with the K30. Other than that, they were TH350 and mostly NP203 through the 70's. |
Re: Transmission options 69-72 Blazers
TH400 in GM 4x4s from the factory was 1977. TH350 is the only automatic available in 1/2 and 3/4 4x4s (Blazers, Trucks, and Suburbans.

Re: Transmission options 69-72 Blazers
It appears, being that the TH350 was new for 1969, it was available in cars (not performance Camaro or Corvette) and the Blazer.
The last time I looked at GM heritage center pickup documents, they didn't show 4x4 with automatic transmission being available until 1970 model |
Re: Transmission options 69-72 Blazers
my 1969 blazer 4x4 has 350/th350 factory combo

Re: Transmission options 69-72 Blazers
I have seen some books where they list the powerglide as an automatic trans option in trucks
|
Re: Transmission options 69-72 Blazers
Specifically regarding the Blazers --- I wondered what the asterisk next to turbo hydramatic meant. If the turbo 400 was never offered and the TH350 was the only transmission offered except manual trans. What is the asterisk for? Just means an automatic transmission? Or possibly means the TH350 was built at one of 2 locations? One location not getting an asterisk and the other does get the asterisk?
