Muncie SM318 Transmission

Does anyone know if the a Borg Warner overdrive R10H-1A from a Muncie SM318 transmission will fit on a Saginaw 3 speed transmission?

I wouldn't consider myself an expert on these transmissions, but I have dealt with a few while helping Dad find one for his 66 C10.

Anyway, the R10 OD units are very similar and do share some interchangeable parts. But I don't think they will interchange between Muncie & Saginaw transmissions. For one thing, I believe the adapter piece that is sandwiched between the main case & OD unit / tail housing is different between the two.

The main cases are different, but the bolt pattern is very similar. The real problem is ya need the sag. O/D main shaft to put the R10 on the sag. Now if your tryen to use the Muncie r10 to fix a sag. r10 ya might be in business.

If anyone has any sag. O/D mainshafts I would be interested.

So the OD main shaft is different between the two? Would you suggest rebuilding the Muncie with the overdrive and ditching the Saginaw?

Re: Muncie SM318 Transmission

Tough question. if ya have a stock rear end,( 4:11 or 3:73s) you will probably miss the overdrive. And the shifter linkage from the Muncie won't fit the sag. either. My thoughts would be, rebuild the Muncie, and then start lookin for a sag. O/D or a 5 speed if you think you need a stronger tranny.

Re: Muncie SM318 Transmission

I'm not concerned about the strength of the transmission, I have a 250 six that's all stock, 155 horses. I'm just looking for a little better mileage and less strain on the engine. Rear end is stock 3.73. I want to maintain the column shifter as well, not interested in the floor shifter. Thanks for your response!
