Anyone used a sideways 5.3?
There is an Impala SS in this weeks sale and I was just wondering if anyone had used a motor that was originally sideways. I figured the intake could be reclocked with the air inlet moved to the front. I don't know what else would be different I did note the valve cover was different but could also swap sides on that to make the oil fill on the right front corner. I have several 4L60E's laying around that could be used but am a little low on 5.3 motors [I have a couple DBW and a couple throttle ones] but the rest are 4.8's and they don't sell as good but I may use some on a couple of the trucks I have to build.
So the question is has anyone used one or have one to use and found out what all has to be done to turn it "halfway" around in the truck? |
Re: Anyone used a sideways 5.3?
I think the bell housing pattern is different, but I'm sure that they dont have a place to mount a starter since it mounts on the transmission on the front drive cars. I have seen a starter mounted on one but its a lot of work. They're generally not worth the effort

Re: Anyone used a sideways 5.3?
Those LS4's are best saved for rear or mid engine swap projects. Not worth it for trucks and big body cars.
Hold onto it until someone with an MR2 or something along those lines wants a swap. |
Re: Anyone used a sideways 5.3?
ls4 has the 60 degree v6 bellhousing. but still a good little engine. they have 243/799 heads, aluminum blocks, and flat top pistons. a guy i know put one in a old fiero and with mods it makes 412hp at the rear wheels.
