Mysterious spring

There is a coiled metal spring that is attached to the inside of the passengers side door jam on my 72 pickup. It is attached by one phllips head bolt not screw that is located a few inches below the striker. The only way to see the spring is by moving the seat all the way forward and then looking behind the seat to the left so you are looking at the back side of the door jam. The spring is located below the striker hardware. Can someone tell me what the function of the 6 inch or so coiled metal spring in the shape of a music note is?
Thanks......

Well that makes sense. I guess if my original jack and lug wrench weren't long gone I would have known that. Thanks for your help.
