What do you think this truck is worth?

I am looking at buying another truck. It's a 68 3/4 ton long bed, 2wd, 292, 4 speed, posi rear. No power brakes, no power steering. It is in decent shape, but has a rusted out hole in the bottom of the drivers door, and the passenger fender is rusted out at the bottom of the rear section (not too bad, but enough that I not would be happy leaving it). It runs and drives good, just needs a few tweaks like a throwout bearing, exhaust donut, and valve cover and oil pan gaskets. It's pretty far away from me, so I had someone go look at it for me.

Bottom line, it would be a decent running around truck, but needs a little bit more bodywork than I hoped. He wants $2500 for it, and it will cost me close to $1000 to get it home.

Ive attached some pics of the fender, door, sill plate area, and overall.

Any opinions would be welcomed.

Depends on what you want , the 292 and posi are getting hard to find , parts wise . Long bed c-20 , do you want a truck or weekend cruiser ? $3,500.00 sounds cheap enough delivered .

I like the 292, 4 speed combo, wood bed, too

I think his sales prices is based on scrap value plus parting all the good out of it. Added the 2 figures together and totaled it up.

It looks a little more rusty than you think, I would want to see it in person.

Here in SoCal that's a $4000 truck even with the rust. It's more a question of how much of a project are you looking for

Re: What do you think this truck is worth?

is it easier to take the motor out to change the throwout bear, or the trans?

With that big crossmember these manual trans trucks have, I thought maybe...

I know you would get that much money all day long here in New england. I'd call that fairly minimal rust, and the 292 is an awesome engine, so good at low RPM and lots of torque. I like the color too. Go for it, these are getting harder to find like that . That's my two cents.

Re: What do you think this truck is worth?

Wow... my 3/4 ton was complete, no rust, and unmolested for $6K, so work backwards from there to find out whether its worth buying a nicer truck to start with.

I'm no expert as I haven't shopped in a while, but it'd take more than $3K in work to get that truck to where mine started at, so I can't see more than $3K. And mine's a big block, AC, buckets, and so on. But things could have changed a lot in the last 3 years.

I was going to reply that you could find these trucks all over the Pacific Northwest until I saw the Washington plate in one of the pics. I looked at Craigslist in Florida and saw a few trucks closer to you. Buy this its closer to you and will save you some money.:chevy: http://gainesville.craigslist.org/clt/5458222631.html
All in all its up to you and if you think its worth it. I bought a vehicle in Nebraska and my son and I flew there and picked it up. Had a great time driving back and its memories from that trip that last forever. Just my 2 cents.

Thanks for the tip, bow-tie-bandit, that looks like it would require less work, plus the insurance would be cheaper.

The trip home is one of the appeals of this truck (if I drove it home). Just not sure if it's the right one.

Re: What do you think this truck is worth?

without power brakes or steering, the rust, overall condition, etc..my first guess was $1500-$2000. It doesn't seem like a rip off at $2500, but I personally wouldn't pay any over that. I know different parts of the country have huge price swings, but thankfully these trucks have maintained a sensible price range even though they're the most popular old trucks by far. It looks like a solid deal, if that's what you're in the market for. 1k for delivery seems high, doesn't it?

I think I need to get that price down some.

If you do not have the ability to fix all that rust on your own its just not worth the $3500. I see long bed trucks in SoCal that are pretty much rust free in my area for $2500-4000. If you are willing to look nation wide just be patient and keep a look out for that sweet deal.

I just bought my truck here in San Diego and I looked at about 15 c10 trucks. It seemed like despite how good the pics might look everything under $4k had significant rust and/or mechanical problems. Then the prices jump to $6k-$15k for trucks that were in order. I paid $6k for mine which is more than I wanted to spend but the rust was minimal and repaired and mechanically it was sound.

You need to get it down, or find something else and maybe spend a little more initially. Usually spending more initially will save more in the long run of course. In the $4g range you should be able to find something rust free in other areas. This truck is local to me and roughly $4g USD after the conversion and has been for sale for a long time. Not a huge market here for LWB trucks compared to SWB.

http://vancouver.craigslist.ca/van/cto/5443948550.html

Then you've got rebuilt LWB trucks for under $10g USD after conversion.

http://vancouver.craigslist.ca/rds/cto/5441411862.html

Obviously this is a long ways from you, but just shows if you can save a bit more and look elsewhere you could find a better deal. Fly in, drive home, make a trip out of it. You just have to remember to look at how much the truck will cost to make it compared to one you can buy for that total cost.

Just saw that the truck has a WA plate. Is it actually in WA? It'd probably be online for $2500 for awhile as it's nothing special out this way. He'd probably go lower, but for what it's worth you can still find better especially if you're looking for a LWB and not a SWB.

http://seattle.craigslist.org/see/cto/5438043631.html another WA truck looks decent

I bought mine for $4500 with no rust except a tiny spot along top drip rail. I recenty looked at a LWB in my own town that was pretty much rust free for $2500. My wife went crazy at the idea of a second truck so no 2nd truck for me. There are some good deals on LWBs, just gotta keep an eye out.

Man, you guys have way better luck then me. The best one I saw for under $5k was more just a collection of parts, mostly rust free, but requiring full assembly and the guy wanted $3800. He did offer to tow it to me for free though. I guess the San Diego market is tight

It's never a good sign when the price includes towing.

I bought mine in san diego. 1972 C20, 350 4 speed longbed. Pretty untouched original. Cab roof is shot because of a roof mount CB antenna. Bed is near perfect, fenders perfect, doors have small rust, engine needed rebuilding. Cab corners, outer rockers are shot. I bought it to practice body work because I have a 57 chevy to restore and i needed a parts getter and some experience... It had some cool options: dana rear, factory auxilary tank and bed stowage box... I paid $1500, but like others will tell you, it was basically just part-out pricing. I drove it home too!

Re: What do you think this truck is worth?

I bought mine in Sacramento I paid $3800 and it was pretty original besides a stereo no rust at all though. I spent an hour going over it with a magnet and then 3 days looking after I bought it. It leaked every fluid and needed a radiator besides that it ran great. Ive put maybe 2k into it. I pulled the engine replaced all the seals through out the truck and have done some cosmetic work. I even got new tires and every service record for the truck from the old owner

Bottom line long beds are way cheaper than short beds in California

Re: What do you think this truck is worth?

Sounds to me like the price is fair. That said, I never pay asking price. Asking 2500 to me, means will take $2000. soo, $$3000 delivered to you, ok price. No screaming deal, but ok.
I agree with others that if you had say $5000 to spend and willing to take a long bed truck, you keep looking and can buy a really nice example for that price range.

Re: What do you think this truck is worth?

I think it's an ok price, I just like the 292, 4 speed, posi, wood bed. Probably not as hard to find as I think.

Re: What do you think this truck is worth?

Well I live outside of Dallas and found my Jimmy in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Bought a plane ticket out there and drove that sucker home. Best 10 hour trip I've ever made. I told that guy if it wouldn't make that trip, I wasn't interested in it. I paid a lot more than 3500, but when you consider all that you're gonna have to do to that truck, in the end you're gonna have a two wheel drive 3/4 ton long bed. If that's what you want, that's awesome, but there is a BUNCH of those trucks out there. May take awhile, but you'll know it when you see it.
