72 C30 dualler
Hello, I am new to the forum. I am presently building a 1972 Chevy C30 1Ton dually. I have come across a problem that no one seems to be able to help or know about. This truck has budd wheels on the rear and regular steel wheels one the front. It has disc brakes on the front also. I want to put a budd wheel on the front so that I will only have to carry one spare. How do I accomplish this. Do I have to get new spindles and hubs for the budd offset, or can I use an adapter to off set it?

Re: 72 C30 dualler
Find you a one ton say 73-87 and do a crossmember swap that may be the quickest and painless way to go then you have really good parts to sell someone that needs a disc brake change over for a 67 -70 truck. The General did make C-30's with the single wheel. It sounds to me someone either converted a single wheel one ton or a C20 to a one ton.
If I recall it might be the same parts in the front for the C-20 and C30, but I'm sure someone on here that has been into more of them than I have will speak up. I DO know on the later trucks say the 88-98 body style that the C6P[heavy duty] 3/4 [8 lug]ton truck had the same front end stuff as the single wheel one ton. [just a side note in those years 88-98 there were two different 3/4 tons. A light duty [7200 GVW 6lug] and a [8600 GVW8 lug] heavy duty. I loved building those 3/4 tons back then easy sellers in farm country. Jim |
Re: 72 C30 dualler
Jim, This is a true C30 according to the VIN. Dual wheels on the rear. All I want to do is put a budd wheel on the front, it seems awful drastic to have to change the whole front end just to achieve this. Thanks for the input, I will let you know how I solve the problem.

Re: 72 C30 dualler
Does it specify R05 Dual Wheel Conversion on the SPID? Was it a pickup originally? All too often a base C30 (SRW) will have a dually axle added out back. Its also possible that someone installed used C20 or C30 SRW rotors up front as easy replacements at some point.

Re: 72 C30 dualler
I'm not sure about the 72 but the later trucks 73-87 the offset hub was part of the front rotor. I think these are interchangeable with the single wheel front rotor but not positive. Or you could maybe get a dually adapter from a 01-07 3500hd. These trucks used bolt on adapters instead of being made into the rotor.

Re: 72 C30 dualler
they make an adapter you can buy to do this. to me that would be the easy way to do this.

Re: 72 C30 dualler
If you can find the offset rotor for 71-72 you can just swap it on. I have not been able to find them new. If you find a 73-87 donor vehicle you can just swap everything between the ball joints. no need to swap the cross member. I just did this swap on my 71 c 20. I used the spindle rotor caliper and brake lines from a 78 C 30 with bud wheels and it worked like a dream. I kept my same cross member same a frames, same ball joint same tie rods. Bolt on conversion. The only thing I did was re route the brake line a bit. The same set up also works from G model trucks (boxvans) all the way up to 95 I believe. The rotors , brake lines and calipers are easily available new. All you really need from the donor is the spindles. However, If Jeff's Bowtie's has good rotors from a 72 buy them ,its the easiest way.

I used 1986 C 30 parts. 1968 inner tie rod's, 1986 outer tie rod's onto the parts. Brand-new rotors and calipers. 1986 ball joints and spindles. It worked out very well.

Re: 72 C30 dualler
Maybe 71-72 tie rod ends are different than 67-70 but mine from the 71 fit the 78 spindle perfectly as did my ball joints.
