Bench seat console
4 Attachment(s)
Thought I'd share incase anyone is looking for ideas for a one off bench seat console.
I wanted a console for the bench seat in my 72 K20. Rather than buy one from the catalogue, I decided to attempt to make one from a factory center console. I scribed the top of the console to the bench then cut and glued on the back piece from the bottom of the console. I made a floor with 1/4 " pine, then fiber glassed it along with the cup holder area that was also fitted with pine. It's off to the upholstery shop now to get wrapped in vinyl or leather. I'll post another pick when I pick it up. I'm also going to flush mount a couple challenge coins. Steve |
Re: Bench seat console
I have been watching the swap meets for a factory console to do exactly what you are doing. Very curious to see what it looks like sitting on the seat.

Re: Bench seat console
Great idea! Can't wait to see the finished product. With all the consoles that have cracked mounting holes, this may be a good side business for you.

Re: Bench seat console
That is a good idea. Lookin' forward to seeing the finished product.

I decided to add some inlay walnut to match the instrument cluster and glove box. A few more coats of poly and it's ready to be wrapped in walrus grain. |
Re: Bench seat console
Good idea Steve - I wonder if velcro strips added to the bottom alone would allow enough friction to keep it in place under hard braking....

Re: Bench seat console
Looking good. I have a console squirreled away to do this. I was thinking about having an eyelet underneath front and rear. Attach a bungee cords under the seats front and rear and hook them around to the console. When I wanted to carry three people just detach the bungee and tuck them under the seat out of sight

Been thinking about doing this same style console since seeing another member here doing it. I think it's a great idea for something period correct looking.

Re: Bench seat console
So you just take it out when you need room for two passengers?

Mine will have a lower profile as I only used the lid. |
Re: Bench seat console
Don't know if you need to or not but my seat counsel has a loop on the bottom for a seat belt or tie strap. It looks good!

So it didn't work out at the upholstery shop, guy said he would use staples! So I took it home, prepped it out, and used the rattle can. I added carpet on the inside and non skid rubber on the bottom. Finished. Heading home to Oregon end of the month so I'll see how it looks and sits on the bench seat.

Finally posting a PIC sitting in the truck.
Console top same height as the door panel arm rests. Nice to have a place for my coffee and some storage too. |
Re: Bench seat console
Where did you get that plastic seat cover? Console turned out nice. I was going to do this and had a brain fart and let my console go away for cheap forgetting about this thread.
