10 Bolt Upgrades

After just looking up a new 12 bolt for my S10 I'm thinking maybe just doing upgrades like stronger axles and the Ultimate cover. The F Body guys are saying the stock S10 10 bolts can handle 350-400HP without sticky tires and using the Ultimate cover with studs, would adding aftermarket axles improve it to 550-600HP without sticky tires?

Should I just have a 8.5 10 bolt narrowed since the 4x4 version is so wide [S10 4X4]. I'm not going drag racing but the thought of having a stock looking S10 with a turbo/4.8L LSx intrigues me.

Well I have done it every way you can do it . If you are lucky enough to to find a factory 8.5 2wd they work good . Weld the tubes to the housing . they have G body ends so c clip elms are easy to get and 30 spline and a 8.6 gear .

9 inch ford .......easy to build cheap if you do your homework .

I even did the Camaro 28 spline posi and aftermarket shafts in a 7.625 later model factory rear . I seemed to lose the pinion bearings on the small axle . I will never build another 7.5

Now the "Ford Explorer rearend swap" is the best thing for the S-10 now you gain 3.73,handles more HP and also get rear disc brake upgrade...............check it out...........

I was driving behind a jeep something or other late model and do they have dana 44's in them? it wasn't the Patriot or the other junk models but the bigger 4 door versions. We had one at the shop once and remember the axle shafts being quite thick.

A buddy of mine has an 8.5 in his S10 blazer. Runs a Moser 35 spline spool and their axles. Has 640hp (without nitrous) 421 small block. Runs 10.20's off the bottle, with a tranny brake. 3 years now.

Just FYI, yhe V8 powered Trailblazers/Envoys have an 8.6 rearend, along with some versions of the Colorado/Canyon. They may be a little wide for your app. It's worth taking a tape measure to junkyard. BTW, they're 6 lug axles.

To my knowledge, the Trailblazer SS's all have 9.5" 14 bolt differentials. I believe those are the only Trailblazers with V8's.

The 5.3 TRailblazer/Envoys ALL had an 8.6 rearend. Pretty much all the 4.2 powered ones were the 8", which is still a good rearend. Some EXT models had the 8.6 also. The 8" is a small step up from the 7.5/7.6. It has quite a bit more meat around the center section. I suspect it uses the same 28 spline shafts as the 7.5/7.6.

The only posis for the 8" are the oem G80 and the Eaton/Detroit Truetrac.

Re: 10 Bolt Upgrades

We've blown at least (7) 10-bolts behind our WS6. At around 350hp, a stock 10bolt frowns. You can use the girdle/brace for the housing which will help the external strength, but it will only do so much. The case itself is actually sorta weak.

We have a large girdle/brace for the f-body 10bolts (has the bracket fit for the fbody) if youre looking for one. I'll have to double check which brand. (T/A or AAM I think). Its brand new.

I stand corrected. I did not realize that some Trailblazers/Envoy's were available with the 5.3.

Re: 10 Bolt Upgrades

i did a 8.5 10 bolt rear in my 1985 c10. i had it narrowed 11.5" and welded the tubes and replaced the 28 spline and upgraded to a 30 spline axle (88-up), i used moser axles, auburn diff. w/ LS and 3.73 richmond gears with the moser rear cover. i was told it could hold up to 600hp. i have not used it yet.
