1971 Steering Column Question....

Wondering if anyone could tell me what the easiest way to replace the rubber that covers the hole where the steering column comes through the fire wall.

Well, I'm pretty sure the column needs to come out in order to do this correctly, because I doubt you can fish that gasket over the tube/shifter linkage and fish it through the hole in the firewall and still be able to get it fitted in the sheet metal opening correctly.it's a "grommet" of sorts to keep water and fumes out of the cab.

x2 on the belief the column has to come out. That, or, like both of the '72s I've had, if you cut the grommet at the bottom you can install it over the column and (almost) not know the difference. If I were replacing it, though, I guess I'd remove the column before cutting... just because I'm OCD.

Thanks for the responses, I was afraid of that. I'm a little OCD also so that's why I was even attempting to change out this grommet. The one on the truck now isn't torn but just doesn't look real nice...

Thanks again for your time!!!
