Rear end ID help?
I know there's a jillion threads on this, and I usually have no trouble doing a quick google images search, but I'm struggling to ID the rear end on my new truck. The bolt pattern just doesn't look the same as what I'm seeing online, specifically the two bolts on at 3 o'clock and 9 o'clock that look closer together. Can someone smarter than me tell me for sure what this is?

Never mind, found it!

Re: Rear end ID help?
Since that is not the expected Dana 5500 I'd be interested in seeing the stamped id on the dropout. Then we would know if it is a H052 or a H072 and if it is a factory locker.

Re: Rear end ID help?
I crawled under and snapped pictures of the numbers I saw, but i think they are too grimy to quite make out. I didn't have time to break out some cleaner and a brush today, but I may give it a go tomorrow and see if I can get a clearer picture of all the numbers.

I have read previosly on this web site that the HO52's dont have the preload adjustment shown in the picture below. The 57's and 72's have it.
It should Never be touched or loosened or adjusted for any reason unless the rear is being totally rebuilt by a competent and renoun rebuilder who can follow directions and can read write and speak english.. many a rear including one of my own have been ruined by bubba mechanics who think its a fill plug for oil. A village idiot would at least recognise that it is not at the lowest point in the rear and the only thing it will drain is your wallet. Dont loosen it dont even look at it and warn bubba not to go near it. splash Holy water at it if in doubt.Armed guards? I dont know what works to keep curious bubba;s from putzing around with it? its a preload adjustment not a fill hole or drain hole. |

Re: Rear end ID help?
That's a new one on me -- I have never heard of an HO57 differential. Common knowledge on this board is that all HO72s have the preload bolt, and that some (not all) HO52s have it. Good warning not to mess with it as it's not an oil fill plug.
Anyone have anything to add regarding the existence (or not) of an HO57? Tim? |
Re: Rear end ID help?
I could be wrong about the HO 57 designation but I thought It was stated in the driveline section.
