Anyone else using an SCU speedometer drive?

My 4L80E doesn't have a mechanical speedo output (if I knew what I know now I would have spent for the custom tailhousing!) and so I have the TCU controller hooked to an Abbot Laboratories (now branded as TCI) "SCU" speedometer control unit.

It's a little black box with a motor in it that spins your speedo cable electronically.

My problem with it is at low speed - they don't seem to spin it slowly, they pulse it, so it "jumps" up to 40, then 0, then 30, then 0, then 35, then 0, and so on. It's annoying to look at but perhaps more annoying is that you can hear it too! The box is nowhere near weatherproof so has to be in the cab.

Before I toss it or it drives me crazy I thought I'd look for others who maybe know how to set it up differently, or have other solutions to the noise and needle dance. If not, consider this post a cautionary tale :-)
