Powder coating rim issues
I got a call from a pretty reputable powder coating place on the south side of Chicago where I dropped my rims off. Standard rally. They said that due to the outer rim heating at a different rate than the center piece that bubbles formed in the powder coating at the joint between the two metals. They said they will sand blast coating off at no additional charge so I can paint it. Not happy. Anyone ever heard of this before?

Re: Powder coating rim issues
I'm no expert but it sound's like BS to me.... I'm thinkin that maybe there oven isn't working properly or they placed your rim's too close to the heat source IE the element.
Oh BTW I would only pay them for the sandblasting job like 80 bux! Cuz that's all they did. |
Re: Powder coating rim issues
I'll bet if I go out, lay on the ground and look closely at mine I'll see some bubbling at that spot as well. I'm not sure the reason they gave is accurate, since steel and steel should probably heat at the same rate. I'd guess its junk that didn't get removed in the cleaning process.
You might want to ask the internet. I hear you can search for stuff... |

That why I have you guys. Your better than the Internet |
Re: Powder coating rim issues
My brother-in-law runs/owners NorCal Powderhouse. He has had these problems with rims that are pieced together. He states there is oxide, debris, chemicals in microscopic levels in those cracks. He combates the problem with multiple bead blasting passes, multiple heating cycles and lots of luck/prayer.

Re: Powder coating rim issues
We have had this issue before ;for the daily drivers we did not worry about it;for the restored trucks we painted the rims after media blasting ....solves the problem and looks more original.

Re: Powder coating rim issues
So based off this article. It is more common than we think
http://powder365.com/forum/viewtopic...cb6f1b4b68ebf7 I will see how it looks and argue from there. They never warned me. My dad had this same thing happen on the ralleys on his 63 vette. Hard to see but he was not happy just thought it was a sloppy job. It looked just like the first pics in the article. If that is all the bad hey are I will be ok with that. But still going to argue the price down. But at least they did tell me what happened and I need to plan for the worse |
Re: Powder coating rim issues
Good info since I'm about to redo a set of rally's. I think I'll just go with paint for sure after seeing this

Re: Powder coating rim issues
It makes sense to me. Different metals WILL heat differently. Plus, there is a shallow groove where they meet were powder coating could pile up in and bubble due to the excess or extra coating that fills that gap. I had my ralleys done and they look great BUT I bet the area they talked about MAY not hold up in the long run...... only time will tell.

Re: Powder coating rim issues
Will see. Hoping it is a small issue that I will deal with. I heard painting will discolor with the heat from the breaks. Going to pick them up soon. Just ordered my tires. So hope they are not worse than I am expecting

Well the rims are trashed. At least they owned up to the issue. They are going to dip them and strip the coating back off to bare metal. No charge for anything. He did apologize as they should have warned me. So I am going to paint them. Look how bad the bubbles are

Re: Powder coating rim issues
So I was on my way back from picking my mother in law up at the airport when I ran across an Eastwood store. I knew it was up there but didn't know where. Spun a uturn and left the mother in law in the truck and did a little shopping. 3 cans of argent silver and 2 cans of clear. Now just need to wait to get the rims back and paint them

Re: Powder coating rim issues
I did a set today. Sandblasted, made sure to get the remaining sand out of the seam with a razor blade, primed, painted the backs and tire surfaces semigloss black, then did the faces last. Really happy with how they turned out. I didn't go with any of the argent I found as it all seemed too dark for me. I matched up some duplicolor rattle can to a spot that was covered with a wheel weight so I'm pretty sure it's close. I'll put 2-3 coats of clear on tomorrow with a spray gun and call them done.
