Power steering 69 I6
My nephew just picked up a 69 C10 with manual brakes, steering, and three on the tree. We've been trying to find a power steering conversion for an in-line 6 and haven't found anything. Do they make such an animal, or does he need a V8 swap just to get power??

Re: Power steering 69 I6
Power Steering for L6s was available. Brackets for 250s are not that hard to find. The P/S pump and gearbox were same Saginaw equipment as SBCs.
292 P/S brackets are much rarer, possibly since most 292s were in fleet-ordered trucks with nothing fancy. There are aftermarket 292 P/S + AC brackets, but they're not cheap. |

Think hens teeth.... Well, maybe not quite that bad but complete PS for an I6 is tough to find. Be sure and get EVERYTHING from the same vehicle. Piecing a setup together is asking for problems... Especially on the pulleys. LockDoc |
Re: Power steering 69 I6
I was having trouble finding the same set up for my I6 also. I ended up finding a guy that was doing a LS swap and bought his complete and running I6 with power steering for $250. When I bought my truck it wasn't running so it worked out great for me.

Re: Power steering 69 I6
Don't limit your search to trucks. Buick, Olds, Pontiac and Chevy cars used the 250 up until '78. In '79 they changed the 250 head and so the PS brackets are not usable on your '69.

Thanks for the input, guess i'll need to expand my search.

Re: Power steering 69 I6
The support bracket that mounts on the head is the hardest to match.
There's several different head designs to consider. I have parts and pieces of differnet ones but ,missing parts on all.! Good luck! Mike.:chevy: |
Re: Power steering 69 I6
Think 70's novas for example. Many of them had P/S. My 70 has power steering on a 250, so let me know if I can help. My uncle built the engine, and unfortunately I'm not sure where he sourced the P/S from, but I do know the truck didn't originally have it.

Re: Power steering 69 I6
So, we found an overbuilt complete 355 for $1500. Includes the alt, p/s, and a/c. Problem solved. Anyone need a 250 runs great. :)
