Correct Starter

The starter on this '70 K5 I just got sounds like the running gears of hell when I start it.......I shimmed it so far about 3/64 (.048) and it still sounds bad....

I'm wondering if it's the wrong starter...perhaps for a different tooth count flex plate...or just a junk, box store unit?

What is the correct flex plate for this motor...153T or 168T.......350/350turbo with staggered starter mount holes ?

Re: Correct Starter

Staggered hole starters are for 168 tooth flexplate. Straight across the 153 tooth. Aftermarket starters sometimes are straight across and can be used for either flexplate size.

thanks for the info.........I did some searching and found a lot of good info on here regarding starters.....I'm gonna put it on the lift this afternoon and take a look at what's going on with it.

Re: Correct Starter

OK....I have a 168 tooth flex plate.....and a 9 tooth starter......that could be the issue? In doing a search, I found a post where someone had declared that the 168 tooth flex plate must use the 11 tooth starter....? I have one coming...we shall see.....
