So is the only difference on a barn door handle vs. a passenger side door handle the length of the pin that actuates the opening mechanism?

Little more research on it shows it is used for many applications, Van, Burb and Truck. It is the early 67-68 Style with the straight tapped holes and the long shaft. Shaft must be trimmed 3/8" pending application. Burb barn or 3rd door, Van RH or Truck RH.

CG - your question regarding the length of the pin between the standard doors and the barn doors is accurate based on my very recent experience. I ordered a right-hand passenger door handle for the barn door, not knowing the difference. Once installed, the pin wasn't long enough to actuate the linkage and open the door. Luckily, I was able to salvage the button/pin from the old one, and got it to work. Now if I could just figure out how to get the new door lock cylinders to actuate the lock/unlock linkage in the door. Anyome have a picture of what the actuator/pawl looks like for the barn door of a '72 Suburban? I think I have door pawls (I just purchased the the burban, so don't have history with it)
