New to me GMC 4000?
 
Just got 1964 GMC 4000 farm grain truck with 4 speed/2 speed rear end and v6 can anyone tell me what size truck this is? will post pics layer, red with wooden bed sides.

It it considered a Medium Duty truck.
Wheelbase, spring options and tires will determine the GVRW. Also taken into consideration whether it is a Cab and Chassis or factory Stake Bed.

No tag, the only tag is the 4000 number. it is a stake bed and has an id plate on drivers door top, but did not have anything to write with.

There is supposed to be a metal tag on the drivers side kick panel that will tell you the GVWR as well as some other info. Without that it is hard to say what the weight rating is of that truck. Do the front wheels have 5 lug nuts and 10 on the rear, or does it have 6 lug all the way around? Yes I did say 6 lug. I have the remnants of a GMC 4000 that was sprung rather heavy and had 6 lugs all the way around with 22.5" wheels

The GMC 4000 was rated for 19,500 pounds. Without a bed they weighed in around 6100 pounds. But add a bed like that and the weight goes up while the payload goes down.

in 63-66 the 4000 is the lightest of the medium duty truck; just from the 1 ton. In 60-62 in GMC there was a 3000 series but was discontinued after 62. it had a 5 luf frt and a 10 lug rear wheels.
"A GMC 4000 series truck is rated for 19,500 lbs, they tip the scales at around 6100 lbs which would leave you
with 13,400 lbs, or 6.7 tons. Most folks call these bigger trucks a 2 ton because they don't know any better.
Of course that is with out a bed installed, which would raise the weight of the truck and lower the payload."

the tag next to drivers left leg states that it is 19500 gvr. Numbers above door are GMC truck DD, Y4005, F31978E. ?

From what I was able to get:
4005 means 4000 model with a 157 inch wheel base.
F means it was built at the Flint, Michigan Plant.
31978 is the serial number.
E makes it a Class 5. 16,001-19,500 GVW.

Thanks for the info. found insurance paper and truck is listed as a 1966. What serial number started in 1966, 1001? Will have block numbers tomorrow, After replacing about all the gas line was able to start and drive home and she runs like champ but no brakes. Bought a Chevrolet truck just like it in Wichita for 200.00 that ran when parked but someone helped them selves to the gas tank, truck is a 292 4 speed /2 speed. will bring that one home next week, gonna drive it home about 80 miles. It'll be an adventure!!

I need to find a PTO shaft for the GMC where do I begin looking. Can anyone give the the GM part numbers for the connecting ends??

Looks like you are re writing history a bit. We will define medium duty as the 105" conventional cab with large front fenders and running boards. The 3500 was the lightest '63-66 GMC medium duty truck ( 10,500-20,000 GVW). The 4000 was available in the 15,000-24,000 GVW range. Many front and rear axles were interchangeable between these models to give similar GVW's, yet different series.

forgot about that 3500 series. I did have a 3500 but it was a 77 and up here that nbr was used for a 1 ton
all the medium had options but not trying to rewrite history; we can't with you around

What do you have for ends. anything on your pto or what you want to drive on the other end. you pretty well have to make them up. as long as you can get the yokes and ujoints for the ends you can just go get a shaft whether it is round or square shaft that you need. truck or farm implement or hydraulic shops are good places to get the ends. There are quite a few different end.
here is a pict of a shaft that i have laying around. there id a different yoke on either end

Would the PTO shaft from a '63 C30 work?

Ron did not see a picture. Does one end or both travel (move) so that shaft , may be connected? I saw one that had bolts that tightened shaft to the yoke , both sides after installation, not what I would call a GM design. Someone or corp supplied yoke ends and u-joint end to GM originally, not off the self. I want mine to function and look as designed if at all possible.

GM didn't really supply them. who ever supplied the optional equipment supplied the setup . i you needed a dump box, you specified what box and it would go to them and be installed. a lot of these things were also installed at the dealer end. winches, snow blades or tow truck setup would go to who supplied those. most of the ujoints would have been fairly standard so most dealers would have them in stock. some had the pto on the trans and some had them on the transfer case. there would be no such thing as a std pto shaft
1 st pic is my old 4 x 4 pto shaft and the second is for the lift for the deck on my 1 ton. for the 2nd one you can see that it has been modified a few time and the last time for going around corners. I just went to the local steel place and bought a new piece of square stock and have to put it in. one end is slippable for one end and bolts to the yoke on the other end, I was a parts man for IHC in trucks and also farm equip and later sold IHC and Pacific Truck and Trailer years ago
I realize that every one wants to go to the corner store and whatever off the shelf to fit but it doesn't just work that way.
I get calls frequently for furniture parts. I need a leg for a chair that I bought 35 years ago.do you have one. 1st of all I have no idea of what their chair even looks like and the manufac. more than like quit making that style 35 years ago and then went out of business 20 years ago and we haven't even gotten down to colour yet. then you tell them that you can make them a new one. the first thing that spouts from their mouth is how much and you still haven't seen it. you wish that you didn't pick up the phone

Thanks All, think I have it figured out now!! one last question I also just bought a C60 1966 did any of these big trucks come with custom trim ie sails ect?
